San Francisco votes on electrical system takeover

SAN FRANCISCO, (AP) -- Nearly a dozen times over the past century, San Francisco voters have rejected ballot measures to support a takeover of the city's privately run electrical system.

But advocates of public power haven't given up their goal of wresting control from Pacific Gas and Electric Co., and this year are linking support of the measure to combating global warming and securing energy independence.

Proposition H would amend the city charter to require that San Francisco get 51 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar by 2017, 75 percent by 2030 and 100 percent by 2040.

The ballot measure also would require the city's Public Utilities Commission to study ways to reach its clean energy goals, including a transition to a municipal utility similar to those run by about 40 other California cities, including Los Angeles and Sacramento.

The proposition would authorize the Board of Supervisors to issue revenue bonds to fund an acquisition of PG&E's San Francisco operations or construction of a new electrical system — depending on what the study finds.

require that San Francisco get 51 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources

No problem. When the demand in the city reaches twice those resources, PG&E can just turn off the power to San Fran.

And it’s working so well in Venezuela now.

If these freaks really want Communism, then let them have it.

Just don’t make ME pay for it.

A major earthquake will take care of that. I say we shouldn’t rebuild.

Venezuela did this ...

What it amounts to is more pots of money that the elected officials in power can use to hide and manipulate money. Like good little socialists everywhere, until it comes crashing down.

Our local clown shop is trying the same thing, instead they have been ordered to hire an outside forensics budget team to figure out where the money is going. No money is supposed to move without a council vote, and a hole lot of it has been walking around.

My advice, looking up at the sun, probably going to need the power this winter ...

While they’re at it they may as well convert from AC to DC.

San Francisco, a socio-economic experiment run amok. It’s a microcosm of Obama Nation.

Well, let them figure out what they can generate with wind/solar/tide/etc and then limit their other electrical intake to just a shade under that. If they have blackouts/brownouts then they can point with pride and say how green they are.

A major earthquake will take care of that. I say we shouldn’t rebuild.

Then the survivors will flock elsewhere and ruin another community.

You might all recall that San Francisco owns the Hetch Hetchy hydroelectic system that flooded a beautiful Yosemite-like valley in Yosemite National Park.

President Reagan once threatened to remove the dam that floods this valley and the watermelons in SF nearly went berserk.

I don't see the dilemma, most infrastructure is owned and run by municipalities. I guess you could sell it to Spain like we did in areas of the Northeast. Im not complaining, so far variable electric prices are dropping and haven't seen bottom yet.

Actually I live in an area with “municipal power” and it is great. My electric bill is half of what it costs outside the service area served by RG&E, National Grid, and NYSEG. Line maintenance are included in my property taxes and operations are controlled by the town board. The line item in my annual taxes for power is $32.73/yr.

Supply of green energy can be achieved only with higher prices and or subsidies. When their electric bills soar you think San Franciscans will be proud of their green system and willing to pay for it or go for subsidies from the rest of us evil pollution producing energy users? Eventually God is going to remind of us that Proverbs 2:1-10 can be done again.

You're correct. The best electrical systems in the country are state-owned NPPD and OPPD in Nebraska.

Ignorance run amok, and encouraged by the city. Pray tell, when they’re running on 51% solar and wind, what will they do when it’s not sunny and the wind’s not blowing? I’ll tell you what they’ll do.... some will get a clue and most will stick their head in the sand.... and in San FagFreakshow you probably don’t want to know what happens to you wnen you’ve got your head in the sand.

I live in an area with “municipal power”

How many generating stations does your "municipal power" own? How many generating stations is your "municipal power" currently constructing? How much capital is your "municipal power" setting aside for future expansion of their generating capacity? I'm going to guess that the answer to all of those questions is "None".

Your "municipal power" isn't a utility company so much as it's a transportation company. Somebody else is footing the bill for your electrical generation while your "municipal power" simply transports the electrons to your home. Works great -- until the generator cuts you off due to excessive expenses. Then you have a bunch of conductors and equipment without a single electron.
