Cardinal Rigali: Faithful Citizenship and Respect for Life
Catholic Online ^ | 10/24/08 | Justin Cardinal Rigali

Posted on 10/23/2008 7:12:27 PM PDT by tcg

Our own common sense tells us that not every issue is of the same importance. At various times in history, a people or nation is confronted with an issue that transcends others in importance and that demands a courageous response. The transcending issue of our day is the intentional destruction of innocent human life, as in abortion. We wish with all our hearts that no candidate and no party were advocating this heinous act against the human person. However, since it is a transcending issue, and even supported in its most extreme and horrific forms, we must proclaim time and time again that no intrinsic evil can ever be supported in any way, most especially when it concerns the gravest of all intrinsic evils: the taking of an innocent life.

I think Cardinal Rigali makes it pretty clear in that last section...

Which religions look the other way on this issue? How can any religious group that uses the bible deny that they can vote for pro-choice? I do not understand how people can pray and live in faith and then ignore teachings. I am not overly religious but my faith would not allow me to support something that I knew to be wrong. You are right, if people voted by faith this election would have been just a formality.

Real Catholics do vote Republican. I think you are referring to CINOs, Catholics in Name Only. They excommunicate themselves when they vote for ANY dimocrat since the Democrat Party platform endorses increased abortion.

They CANNOT receive Communion. If you want more information, I’ll be glad to fulfill your request.

Every poll I read has Catholic voters going over 50% Dem. That'a a lot of CINO's.

“if only Catholics would start voting Republican.”

Florida may be different, but Hispanics out west I am sure, notoriously vote the anti-life party, the Rats. Some good their Catholicism is here; though I am sure there are pockets of the faithful.

And here, the Church is often lenient with immigration issues.

So, we can count on the big voting blocks of Hispanics in California to vote for McCain? I think not! Most of them are Hispanics and it shows what kind of voting immigration amnesty can let in!

I’m Catholic, I know that is the way it is suppose to be, but I doubt a Priest of some parish in Los Angeles is going to be informed as to whom his parishioners voted for. This is being NAIVE!

That's probably about right, actually. They're C&Es (Christmas and Easter); Mass about once a month; hatched, matched and scratched as they say. There's a lot of cultural Catholics out there who claim the affiliation and haven't completely fallen away, but don't make the Faith the center of life. I know a lot of them and, yes, they drive the rest of us crazy when they flaunt the teachings.

The internals on today’s Battleground Poll have McCain up among Catholics by 10%.

There may be some hope- the new IBD/TIPP poll now has Catholics at +9% for McCain compared to -11% from the prior poll.

I have neighbors who are very active in the Church. They receive Communion every Sunday.

Each election, they have their yard sign out for whoever the pro-partial-birth-abortion democrat candidate is.

There are many Catholics just like them. They have never considered that maybe they shouldn't be receiving Communion because they are pro abortion.

IMHO this is the fault of the Church, for not being clear about pro life issues. It's about time they speak up.

Nancy Pelosi actually did Catholics a favor, by illustrating the problem.

See what happens when the bishops actually start doing their jobs.
