LONDON — An Iranian ship captured by Somali pirates carried sealed containers of a powdery substance believed to be nuclear or chemical weapons agents.

Western intelligence agencies have been monitoring the capture of the Iran Deyanat, seized by Somali pirates on Aug. 21. The cargo ship, owned and operated by the state-owned Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, or IRISL, contains sealed cargo thought to be linked to the death of 16 pirates.

“A stolen ship, reregistered and a suicide blast is NOT farfetched. Besides, they would get the insurance from a no proof of who owned the tub explosion.”

How exactly do you steal a large ship and transfer that amount of cargo without being noticed? Ships just don’t wander the oceans like that, and stealing a ship is not like walking up to an unlocked car and driving away. Ships are worth millions and don’t ever sit around without some crewmembers on board.

Why do you try to insert logic when considering the motives of the Mullahs? They would not have cared if anyone knew who it was, as a matter of fact, they would have made sure the whole world knew it. Second, that ship can carry many thousands of tons of cargo so tons of explosives necessary to blow a cloud into the air is only comprised of an area about the size of a large U-Haul truck (remember OK City?). Third, seeing a ship steam up to the territorial waters and stop would have only needed a few hours to let the crew get away (if that was ever the intent) and by the time someone was wise to an idle ship being there it would have already exploded. So what if the Israelis became wise to it? What were they going to do, sink it with a torpedo? (Same end result). We never expected terrorists to fly hijacks airliners into buildings until it happened.

They’ve (the media) been mixing up two different ships for a while.

1) Ukrainian ship with 33 Russian battle tanks and arms and ammo was for Eritria (Sudan)

2) Iranian ship from China to the Med. with radioactive sand.

The pirates have quite a flotilla of hijacked ships.

Anyone want to bet how many of the pirates were really IDF or Mossad agents?

How many aren't already dead? Them's the ones.

40 dead Somali Pirates is a net sum gain in my book. The reports of this being a dirty bomb, ready to explode sound like something from one of John Bachelor’s shows...

I do believe that the US ought to take a couple of “Trojan Horse” freighters, load them up with sufficient Special Forces to blow the asses off of any raiders that attack, and send them trolling off the Horn of Africa. Invite these “pirates” to attempt a hijack, and wipe them out as quickly as possible. If you do that a couple of times, and do it right, there won’t be any pirates left very soon.

In September 2008, IRISL came under U.S. sanctions as a company that helps Iran’s nuclear and other strategic programs. The U.S. Treasury Department said IRISL regularly falsifies shipping documents to hide the identity of end users, uses generic terms to describe shipments and operates under various covers to circumvent United Nations sanctions.

“IRISL’s actions are part of a broader pattern of deception and fabrication that Iran uses to advance its nuclear and missile programs,” Treasury Undersecretary Stuart Levey said. “That conduct should give pause to any financial institution or business still choosing to deal with Iran.”

Or the applicable parties baited the pirates by putting out that the drums were filled with, say, pieces of gold or something.

Isn’t this a violation of Maritime law. I mean, the limit is 15 men on a dead man’s chest.

Was Captain Jack Sparrow Iranian?

‘Course those pirates were already dead. I was a little sorry that the monkey was one of the living dead though. He was a cool little zombie.

Anyways... looks like the curse to me. Best thing we could do is wipe out the rest of ‘em and search the ship for clu... carefully search the ship for clues, and if weapons grade chemicals or nuclear material were found proceed to blow up those what sent it.

But then, I’m a ‘compassionate conservative’. Arrrhh, matey’s!

World Tribune is operated by the managing editor of the national weekly edition of the Washington Times and I know that Bill Gertz is involved with it as well.

I forgot to mention the legalities in some territorial waters, of having armed crew or security forces. And then lo and behold, after posting that, I see another thread here about Blackwater (private military - former SEAL company) launching their own ship to run escort through certain waters. I suppose that would be more cost effective than placing teams on all your ships, and it gets around the legalities of having them in territorial waters of some countries as they just escort through international waters.

The ship won't be armed per se, but the crew will be.

How would radiocative sand in such large quantities and in such a toxic level be produced in China?

How does China get away with participating in such an endeavor?

Oh, that’s right. We need their money so our economic system doesn’t collapse.

I dunno—seems like an awful lot of dogs are not barking on this five-alarm story.
