Editorial: Don't throw away your vote by going with McCain or Obama
Charleston City Paper, Charleston, South Carolina ^ | 2008-10-22 | Jack Hunter

I have many Republican friends who are disgusted that I'm voting third party this election year. They believe stopping Barack Obama from becoming president outweighs all else. Meanwhile, I have many Democrat friends who are equally disgusted; for them, seeing John McCain defeated is more important than who wins. They are all wasting their votes.

Imagine a reckless teenager who constantly runs up his parents' credit cards, smashes the family car every Friday night, is failing in school, and has serious drinking and drug problems. Now imagine that no matter how reckless and dangerous that teenager became, his parents believed his behavior was worth tolerating simply because he was "their" kid. No reasonable person would consider this good parenting.

And yet this is exactly how otherwise reasonable people vote.

No matter how bad the Republican or Democrat nominee for president is, the party faithful support their own without fail. The message to politicians? They may lie, ignore their party's platform, and betray every supposed principle, but they will never be held accountable by most voters. Like the reckless teenager, there is simply no reason for them to stop their irresponsible behavior.

The greatest power the people have is their vote, and in supporting the lesser of two evils each election, voters ensure eternal evil.

It would only be false if they were tied.

This is beyond you. I will move on now.

“To me, nothing is above life.”

I agree but do you think one baby will be spared by McCain’s presidency? Do you think one more baby will die by Obama’s presidency? I don’t in either case. It’s the governor’s job to ORDER the arrest of abortionist and after a trial, execute them for murder. If he fails to do that the president should order the justice department to do it. I don’t believe a politician is really “pro-life” if he doesn’t believe that way or if he doesn’t act on those beliefs.

But anyway, I think a more important issue is how much we a people have replaced God in our hearts with so many other things. If that get’s fixed everything else will get fixed. Voting for McCain, or not voting for McCain isn’t going to fix things between us and God.

Because to paraphrase General Ike, the possibility of Barack Hussein Mohammed Obama “would be too bitter to contemplate.”

You're looking at it the wrong way. Let's say that the parents are in the car with their drunken kid at the wheel, in the wrong lane and headed for an oncoming 18-wheeler. Those voting for McCain are the parent who takes the wheel and puts the car in the correct lane. Those voting for Obama don't like the car, so they step on the accelerator while offering the kid another beer. You do neither, because you don't think either is the best course of action - instead, you look out the window at the cars lining the lot of the dealership you're passing by.

In the final analysis, the McCain "parent" eliminates the immediate threat. Addressing the longer term problem is another matter, BUT AT LEAST THEY SURVIVE TO BE ABLE TO LOOK AT AND POSSIBLY SOLVE THE PROBLEM. The Obama "parent" kills everyone in the car - but at least the car is destroyed, so he's happy. You do nothing, resulting in the same result as the Obama "parent."

Me, I'll move the car into the correct lane, and examine my kid's behavior a bit later. If we elect McCain, we've got a chance to influence policy a bit. If Obama wins, all of us will be discussing what would'a, could'a, should'a been done - from the inside of a re-education camp.

Suit yourself. I will stand with my PATRIOT TEAMMATES. I will stand for FREEDOM, not allow Communism to gain control of this country. And I’ll hold McCain accountable for his every move during the next 4 years.

Troll!

You think your vote isn't a throw away by being some dissident? At this point in the game, you are just another obama supporter, by not voting for the MCCain/Palin ticket.

Furthermore, you obviously don't know a thing about Palin, or you wouldn't be making these false statements.

I agree. McCain is not as conservative as we would like, but with him we will at least have a chance to clean up the mess in the Republican party and live to vote another day. With Obama and all dem congress, the media (bringing back “fairness” doctrine) and public education all controlled by the communists, we will be completely shut out and may not get another free election! Voting for a third party candidate at this point is a wasted vote that could have gone toward defeating OBama. The time to campaign for third party candidates (or the most ideal Republican candidates) and get them in position is long before the primaries.

No, you just can't make your case.

If you want to talk about 'effective' impact....third party votes normally have the same impact as non voters in that they do not impact the main candidates' totals at all, so their votes effectively do not exist.

Only votes actually cast for a candidate have any effect on that candidate's totals!

For instance, Perot did not 'steal' votes. The first point is that many of his voters were not tightly aligned with either major party and would not have voted for either major candidate. Second, those that voted for Perot were those whose votes were not earned by either major candidate and NEVER BELONGED to that candidate.

It is a contest to see who can EARN the most votes (not counting fraud).

But since you think that voters OWE their votes to a given candidate you'll never really understand.

I don't think McCain could have ever earned my vote and I'm voting for Palin. However, that 'effectively' translates into a vote FOR McCain.

Where is your Christian forgiveness? “Hate” was not the word, it was intollerance.

And if Falwell can forgive him, what’s up with you?

I’m sorry but Life is more than abortion. There are many life issues. Each of them Obama is against.

Your assumption is false.

Any vote not cast for McCain is NOT and effective vote for Obama.

Thanks for a voice of reason

Lets face it, those who claim “a vote for a third party is a vote for Obama” pretty much admit that McCain stinks as a candidate, and is just as liberal and subversive as B Hussein.

Although I have some disagreements w Baldwin and the CP...they are pretty much the only conservative party left.

If anyone thinks McCain has become “conservative” needs to back away from their drug stash and/or booze cabinet, immediately.

And, God Bless Sarah Palin, but, running with the most liberal, pro-illegal, judge-blocking, Commie China sympathsizer in the GOP does not mean Palin willmbe allowed to use her conservative background. And, you are not voting for Palin if you select McCain

This bashing of third parties from the McCainiacs is so immature, and demonstrative that there are many two-digit IQs in the GOP

A vote for a third party (even for perennial liberal, Nader) cannot cancel a fraudulent vote for Obama, but a McCain Palin vote can because it will be ONLY Obama of McCain elected as president. Fraudulent votes aren’t presented for Nader or Barr or Baldwin. ACORN works for the democrat campaign.

I have to admire the way you put your pinciples ahead of the country.

Some would say that it isn't necesarry, that the quicker the date of destiny, the better chance there is a recognizable America 20 years from now.   Two things need to happen for this to be a reality: Dumb, lazy, and apathetic Americans need to wake up and conservatives need to form a cohesive band to represent people.   McCain wins, it will be the last Republican elected, as conservatism will be destroyed for a generation or two.

I know it sounds twisted, but if the veil is removed and the great undiscussed issues are taken into account (i.e. racial unrest, the 99 trillion dollar bill for entitlements in the next 20 years), it is obvious that America, in the way you and I think of it from a traditional and conservative perspective, is finished, on the current trajectory.

Weak analogy. I know because I lived it...eight years of Clinton because some wanted to send a "message" and voted for "Radar" Perot. Elections have consequences...and to those who voted for Perot I ask, "How'd that work for you? Any discernible lesson conveyed, other than it was stupid?"

We'll have a president for the next four years...and for those who didn't 'waste' their vote and voted for some nobody who had no chance of winning, at the expense of the lesser of two evils...I'll spend the next four years pointing out that Nobama is THEIR President, made possible by them...and ask them, "How's that working out for you?"

I guess the sad part of living in a democratic republic is that we all get to pay for the stupidity of some.
