WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Officials in the United States are looking into the recent arrest of an Iranian-American student in Tehran who was working on a research project on women's rights in Iran.
Esha Momeni, a graduate student at California State University-Northridge, was arrested October 15 in Tehran for unlawfully passing another vehicle while driving, according to Change For Equality, an Iranian women's movement.
"We're seeking additional information about this case," State Department spokesman Robert Wood said Wednesday. "We stand with all those in Iran who are working for universal human rights and justice in their countries."
Momeni, who was born in Los Angeles, California, is a member of Change for Equality's California chapter. She arrived in Tehran two months ago to work on her masters thesis project on the Iranian women's movement, according to the group, which is in touch with Momeni's family in Iran.
Momeni is being held in a section of Tehran's notorious Evin Prison that is managed by the Intelligence Ministry, the group said.

DWA --- Driving while American.
The islamic regime doesn’t give a rip about foreign citizenships of Iranians. To them they are Iranian subjects and as such open prey. The murder of a Canadian-Iranian journalist in prison was the latest case. Prayers for her and the other political prisoners.
Not at all surprising.
“working on a research project on women’s rights in Iran”
That’s like working on Jewish culture project in Germany in 1934.
I have a number of questions about this girl and her family.
It seems she thought she was safe from the regime, for some reason. If she had 2 passports - 1 Iranian, she isn’t. The Iranian regime doesn’t recognize dual citizenship.
My fear is her naivte has cost the lives & futures of women she filmed, photgraphed and those whose names she had on her computer.
What business does a woman have driving a car? /s
Dumb a$$.
Now we may have to go in and save his behind at the price of the lives of our military.
He needs to stew in jail for his bad judgement.
Not our problem.
So sad. Too bad.
HER.
Women are allowed to drive in Iran
“Now we may have to go in and save his behind at the price of the lives of our military.”
No, we won’t do that
I didn’t realize it was a “her.”
Worse yet because she should have known better.
Too bad. So sad.
Compassion is the well of the soul. Looks like yours has rather dried up.
“Compassion is the well of the soul. Looks like yours has rather dried up.”
Compassion is the well of my soul but not stupidity and putting other folks lives in danger because of some ediot.
If you like to get a little group together and try and save her, be my guest.
Stupid is what stupid does.
This has nothing to do with compassion, it has everything to do with common sense.
Hey, she was askin’ for it, you know?/s
Thank you my good friend.
I could not have said it better!!!
“Hey, she was askin for it, you know?/s”
Obviously she was or she wouldn’t be in jail or where ever.
It is called “common sense.”
And by the say, I am a woman and not siding with her because of her stupidity..
“A person has to be a fool to go to Iran and work on a research project on “women’s rights in Iran””
This gets to one of the issues of this story.
This student was born in the U.S., but it sounds to me like she grew up in Iran and only came back here to get her graduate degree. So, for her, Iran was her home. Apparently, for some reason, she thought she was safe from the regime.
I’m hoping to find out more information.
Well some day you might make a mistake and need help.
Thrown in prison, doing hard time for merely passing another vehicle?
Sounds real stupid fer sher......
Forget about helping a fellow countryman/woman. All that matters is your own selfish interest as long as there is no skin off of your arrogant hide.
