Margin shrinks in defeat of gay marriage ban (Prop 8)
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Thursday, October 23, 2008 | John Wildermuth

A majority of California voters oppose Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in the state, but a new statewide poll shows that the gap has narrowed in the past month.

While Prop. 8 is losing with 44 percent in favor to 52 percent opposed among likely voters in the survey by the Public Policy Institute of California, opponents of the measure had a cushion of 14 percentage points, 41 to 55 percent, in a poll by the same group last month.

But the battle over Prop. 8, which supporters and opponents have described as the second most important contest in the nation, is drawing increasing attention. The poll suggests the race is anything but over.

Prop. 8 ahead in other polls

While each of the past three Public Policy Institute polls has shown Prop. 8 running behind, supporters of the measure point to other surveys giving the same-sex marriage ban a lead.

A poll by Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., conducted this month for the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic group that has put more than $1.2 million into the effort to pass the measure, showed Prop. 8 ahead 52 to 43 percent. A SurveyUSA poll done last week for a group of California TV stations had Prop. 8 with a narrow lead of 48 to 45 percent.

But an increasing number of Prop. 8 supporters say the campaign against same-sex marriage is a top priority for them - 69 percent of its backers call the election "very important," up from 62 percent in September. Among opponents, 49 percent say the outcome of the election is very important, down from 51 percent last month.

The gays are threatening people with their purses. Soon the street will burn with a hot pink rage...

I’m not sure folks answer honestly when polled on this one.

I would find it hard to believe that 50% +1 would support homosexual marriage, even in California.

We’ll see.

My daughter was faced with a true dilemma regarding Prop. 8.
She has friends, both business and personally who are gay or lesbian. Not surprising in the context of our society today.. school, work....

One of her dear (really nice guy people) gay guy friends was posting all sorts of NO on 8 stuff all over his blogs and she set him straight.

It’s about our kids. You have other avenues of partnerships in California. (gave him the links). It’s about not redefining the natural family.
As much as everyone has disparaged G.W. Bush... I always agreed with his comment in the context of abortion:

“changing hearts”.
It is applicable in this as well.

No one is asking homosexuals to become second class citizens. They will still have the same rights as everyone else.

Yes. That is what my daughter told her dear friend. She tried to use his nieces as examples of the indoctrination that the extremists will seek to exploit.
She told me this morning that she hopes he will understand, because she values his friendship.

I’ve never understood why the numbers should be different from the last state-wide vote on marriage.

she set him straight

Well, that's certainly one way to change hearts. ;-)

The intimidation factor is in play.

Admitting in public that you’re for traditional marriage could
bring on the wrath of the left-wing homos.

I’ve heard that cars were vandalized in California displaying Proposition 8 bumper stickers.

Conservative voters are mum to the press.

I am sure that he will understand. The only gays that I see being radical about this is the media. I have spoken to some gay friends and they are embarrassed by the whole situation. They feel that as long as they get to go visit in the hospital they are cool with how America deals with the gays. Again our damn (excuse me) media is the cause of all this. If you notice, Ellen was completely out of the gay marriage thing in California until the gay Nazi’s told her they will destroy her if she did not support the proposition. It is completely ridiculous.

“A majority of California voters oppose Proposition 8”

BS!

I don’t believe this for a second!

Voters adopted Proposition 22 on March 7, 2000 with 61.4% approval.

And Proposition 8 will pass with flying colors too.

Conservative voters are mum to the press.

Kind of reminds me of the elections in Nicaragua in the '80's, when the peasants were polled, Noriega was winning with a huge margin. When the actual results were in, he lost in a landslide.

The peasants were scared to be honest with the pollsters because of their fear of violence. When they were able to be honest (in a secret ballot), they voted for their real views. Unfortunately, I believe we have a similar situation here.

This is truly an election that will determine if 3rd world intimidation will become the way to win political power in the future. IMO we are still an electorate that will reject the Left’s and it’s handmaiden MSM’s intimidation.

The “polls” also showed the majority of Massachusetts residents also were for homo “marriage”. That's why the moonbats and gay “rights” groups fought tooth and nail to keep a constitutional amendment off the ballet. They are going to lose and they know it.

There were other polls recently showing it passing by something like 6 to 8%. I guess we will find out Nov. 4.

This is from a very lefty polling firm. Every other poll shows Prop. 8 ahead. I guess they sampled voters in just the Bay Area. LOL
