Colin Powell demonstrated his eponymous "Powell Doctrine" of overwhelming force on Sunday when he endorsed Barack Obama on "Meet the Press."
The one-time chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff systematically marshaled his assets to neutralize the Republican endgame strategy, which is to suffuse the air around Obama with a vague mist of terrorism, socialism and "otherness."
Powell was so definitive that it was easy to forget the disconnect: Obama made his reputation with a speech in 2002 warning against war in Iraq, while it was Powell who went before the United Nations and used his credibility to build support for the Iraq invasion.
Powell told Tom Brokaw that he still believes that war was the right course of action, based on what he and other officials knew or thought they knew at the time. He said he believes the war was mishandled. And he said he still opposes a "deadline" for withdrawing U.S. troops, though he added that a "timeline" for withdrawal is beginning to emerge.
That would be a fair summation of John McCain's position on Iraq, not Obama's. Powell framed his endorsement largely in terms of how McCain, Sarah Palin and their supporters have conducted the campaign against Obama and what that conduct says about McCain's judgment. It was hard not to conclude that Powell is offended by some of the Republican tactics and that he has decided to fire back in a way that Obama cannot.

Like Eugene Robinson would even be able to identify principle. Another well known race-baiter.
POWELL is a DEMONCRAT so yes, he based on Demoncrat principles and RACE.
Hey Colon, position this!
What a racist pig!
U.S. Presidential Candidate Barack Obama told the AMERICAN PEOPLE repeatedly in 2007 and 2008: "YES, WE CAN".
Why is anybody still talking about this? They must think Barry needs to get as much mileage out of this as possible.
powell turns out to be a different person than i imagined him to be.
talk about bite the hand that feeds you. powell himself took advantage of his race.
his biographies in newspapers and magazines indicated that he had hard working parents who gave him the values to succeed, and with hard work he rose to the top of the military and political establishments.
now, he turns out to be a resentful advocate of preferential treatment for minorities.
A black man writing an article about a black man endorsing another black man.
I heard tonight that Condoleeza Rice was not supporting McCain. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks.
Who knows? This is one of the few times I would not say “follow the money”.
I do believe he was not telling the truth when he hesitated and let his tongue come forward when talking.
THIS WAS PERSONAL...IMHO
Although Powell is obviously a lot more liberal than many people realized (no surprise to me though), what are the chances that he would be endorsing (and so forcefully, with such vicious attacks against the Republican ticket!!) a different Democrat nominee who had virtually the same positions as Obama but happened to be of “white” skin, say a Dennis Kucinich who somehow managed to get nominated (suspend reality for a moment).
That’s right, it’s just about impossible to imagine Powell doing that in 2008, liberal as he is on “social” issues etc.
One must infer that skin color is certainly the “tipping point” for Powell, even if it is not the sole consideration.
pigment over principle
Interesting.
I've never liked Colin Powell, and I've always seen him as the General and Secretary of State with no clothing. Everyone was so impressed with him, based on absolutely nothing. He was a lousy general, a worse Secretary of State, and a pan-Arabist who helped advance Islamists all around. True, he served our country in the military and during Vietnam, but so have many completely unsung others far better than he.
I have not heard it, and I doubt it
Sorry...follow the money ...AGAIN!
There is also a connection to the cheap purchase and ownership of a radio station by Powell and his son...I think I have been told that McCain backed it in the FCC(?) hearings and then the Powells “flipped” it for a huge profit. John would have been MAD! Just beginning to get the facts so not at all sure of them or the actual time or details...grain of salt needed on this.
Can you research it?
