Article and slide show of Sarah Palin's visit to Grand Junction, CO yesterday. The paper estimates 10,000 attended, but other sources say up to 22,000.
Was the paper trying to infer that she didn’t draw the same number of people like the messiah?
Nice photos. I bet they went nuts went Hank Williams Jr. walked out on the platform. She has a lovely red Vera Bradley bag.
But I thought McCain had given up in Colorado?
You thought wrong. The GOP is sending in reinforcements from other states to help deliver CO to McCain and Allard's Senate seat to Bob Schaffer.
I LOVE SARAH ! (not in a stalking way) hehehe
I don't know. 20,000 it sure could have been. That would be about 1/5 of the county - but I know people came from all over the western slope. Like I said, I've never seen that stadium so packed.
And it was kind of a cold, cloudy day, with a few showers off and on. Nobody left though, even when it started to rain, and they had confiscated all umbrellas.
We ended up going w/ the home school group- had to meet there at 3 (the rally didnt start until 630).
They searched every one and every sign had to pass inspection.
Then, because of our group we got to have seats in the stands, which was good. A lot of people had to just stand for like 4 hours. But they also were down near the platform which was on second base, so they were close to the platform.
The entire infield was filled with people, and all the stands by about 430pm (which was actually the time they said to get there). But people just never stopped coming. When Mr RB arrived about 530pm, the line to get in went around the adjacent football field a time and a half.
They finally stopped searching those people at about 630pm, and just let them stream into the outfield which was separated from the infield by barriers. That crowd filled about half the outfield.
Hank Williams jr played and the two younger daughters came out and listened on the platform. People went nuts.
Then Sarah came out with Todd and the crowd went wild.
Her speech was fine and everyone yelled when she started talking about Joe the Plumber, Ed the Dairyman and Tito the Builder; and also about drilling which is big around here, and coal.
She got an especially big roar when she talked about the second amendment.
She is sort of petite (maybe just because of all the secret service people though- they are big), but she gave a good speech and afterwards talked to a lot of people on the field. You could just see her bun through the shoulders of the secret service people.
There were some protestors out on the football field when the line was really big (it was just across from the college) and I saw a few people with Obama shirts being escorted out. I didnt want to waste any film on them, so no pictures. All in all, a good rally.
I suspect that the IRS is right now preparing for the change just in case.
Terrific support! Especially in view of the fact that Grand Junction is a city of about 45,000.
Wasn’t this the record breaking rally?
great thread, report, pix.. thank you!
The overflow crowd which was waiting to go through security. This line circled the football field 1 1/2 times. Later, they let them in and they filled the outfield.
Thanks for the help: it worked !
According to Wiki - Sam Suplizio Field is a stadium in Grand Junction, Colorado, United States. It’s was named after former New York Yankee right fielder and MLB Coach Sam Suplizio. It is the primarily home for Mesa State College and local high school baseball, and is a possible future home field of the Golden Baseball League minor league baseball team. With new upgrades it now holds 13,000 people.
No capacity rating I have ever heard of counts people standing on the field. By the pictures and your account it was full, so 10,000 count is so off.
The infield picture was not even when it was full - it got full later on. About that many people were on the other side of the outfield barrier too.
Josh Penry, who is a state represtative, said there were 16,000 altogether. Since the stands were full, that means about 1500 in the infield; 1500 in the outfield. That seems a little low to me, but I am no expert in counting crowds.
I’m one of those out-of-state volunteers who is headed to Colorado.
I got this today from McCain’s director of volunteers in CO:
“The CNN (and other) rumors are absolutely not true. Governor Palin was here for rallies in three cities yesterday, and Senator McCain is coming into the state this Friday. We are not pulling out of Colorado. We are going full-speed ahead until Election Day.”
