John McCain's campaign tonight sought to tamp down a report by CNN's John King that they're looking for a path to victory that doesn't include Iowa, New Mexico and Colorado -- all states won by President Bush in 2004.
As King noted, many observers, including Republicans, have long been skeptical of McCain's prospects in New Mexico and Iowa. But Colorado was considered as something of a must-win for McCain to have any chance of winning the presidency.
Two senior aides didn't deny that Colorado appeared challenging, but pointed to the two key indicators of any campaign's intent, time and money, to make the case that they were still holding out hopethere.
"We didn't send Gov. Palin there for no reason," said one, a reference to the vice presidential nominee's three rallies across the state today.
FWIW, here’s CNN’s follow-up report:

Come on! If it’s in the Obamedia Propaganda Machine (OPM), it has to be true.
If there is any truth to this at all, then I think McCain’s chances of winning are really a stretch and Obama will be the next POTUS.
I hope CNN is very wrong.
Yes, I saw that post, but an official media report quoting senior campaign officials seems more authoritative than a Freeper’s phone conversation with a state-level staff member.
“official media”
FWIW.
“If there is any truth to this at all, then I think McCains chances of winning are really a stretch and Obama will be the next POTUS.”
The math doesn’t look good at all without Colorado, New Mexico and Iowa, but it’s also true that you can throw out some of the traditional political wisdom in a race involving a black guy with a radical past and a Muslim name. No one really knows whether people will have second thoughts about actually pulling the lever that gives him power.
Oh please! A report with unknown senior staffers could be anyone. Sorry but McCain is going to win CO and the election.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2110904/posts Then there is this..
I’m not saying I believe it, but this is how we found out about Michigan a few weeks ago.
“Im not saying I believe it, but this is how we found out about Michigan a few weeks ago.”
I can see the point of leaking the news about Michigan since it was going to be obvious that McCain wasn’t spending any money there. But the Politico story makes it clear that McCain is going to be spending a lot of time and money in Colorado. That being the case, what purpose does it serve for someone to leak that we’re feeling bad about our chances in Colorado? Assuming CNN just didn’t make this up. If they did, then the McCain campaign should have come out with a stronger push-back than the statement to Politico. Either way, this is looking a lot like there’s a loose cannon somewhere in the McCain camp.
This is different — much different. There are ads on the air in MI by a 527 for McCain and offices staffed by volunteers for McCain.
All the States surrounding CO including mine are headed into CO to help GOTV for McCain/Palin and the Senate race later this week.
Well, CNN is very wrong.
McCain is coming to CO on Friday after Sarah spending all day and 3 events here today. Clearly it is in play.
Well done. Here’s the link to McCain’s Colorado campaign:

Those who live nearby can find out how they can help at that link.
