'West Wing' actor urges Obama supporters to 'run hard' [knows a thing or two about campaigns]

SUN PRAIRIE — Actor Bradley Whitford, who spent seven years working in a fictional White House in "The West Wing," knows a thing or two about real-life campaigns as well. The Madison native previously stumped for former Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and John Kerry before hitting the trail in support of current Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

Whitford says things are different this time around.

"I've never felt this sense of urgency. I have three kids and I'm sick of picking up the newspaper every day and seeing their future attacked," said Whitford, who was back in Dane County Sunday. Nearly 40 people turned up for Whitford's first stop of the day at Sen. Barack Obama's campaign office in Sun Prairie.

Whitford's main message was to keep pushing despite poll numbers showing Obama pulling ahead of Republican rival Sen. John McCain.

"No matter what the polls say, run hard because I don't trust those other guys. Run hard and through the finish line," said Whitford.

Whitford scheduled stops at four Madison-area campaign offices Sunday. He said that he will also make appearances in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Nevada.

Many in attendance at the Sun Prairie Obama campaign office cited the economy as their chief concern.

"I was in a couple depressions. It's not easy. For the older people it's a little scary, when you've saved all your life," said Margaret Loftus, 91, of Sun Prairie. Loftus was joined by her two daughters Jerry Wagner, 72, and Shirley Wolfgram, 73, both Sun Prairie residents.

While Loftus said she's been politically active her whole life -- her son Tom was a former Wisconsin Assembly speaker, gubernatorial candidate, and ambassador to Norway -- others in attendance were just getting started. Sun Prairie high school senior Rachel Hankel, 18, cited health care, the war in Iraq, gas prices and reproductive rights as her chief concerns this election.

"We need a change in this country," Hankel said.

For others, the importance of this campaign season extended beyond politics. Bristol resident Jan Moore, 54, said the 2008 campaign season helped connect him with entirely new groups of people.

"Any time we can get together for the good of the country it's a good thing," Moore said.

He does, Run hard and through the finish line is good advice.

As to I have three kids and I'm sick of picking up the newspaper every day and seeing their future attacked, guess it's an age thing. My kids are hard working and successful, they'll survie Obama as I survived Obama. I'm more concerned about my grandkids surviving Obama's pile on entitlements, despite the fact that my kids and myself and my kids are surviving those of FDR, LBJ and, sadly, GWB.

I was in a couple depressions. It's not easy, he's lying.

Let's see, what kind of "health care" does your average 18 year-old need to worry about? We're winning Iraq and on our way to significant troop draw-downs, regardless of who's president, gas prices should be down to $2.50 or less, so it all REALLY comes down to the Holy Sacrament of the Democrats: killing babies.

Whitford has always struck me as the quintessential example of a pompous a—, both on and off screen.

The only role I enjoyed him in was in Scent of a Woman, and that was only because Al Pacino put him in a ‘ranger choke hold’ for being such an a—hat. :-)

Brad, you campaigned for Al...and he lost. You campaigned for John Kerry...and he lost. And Barry let you campaign for him? Is that a good idea?

What else can you expect from someone who spent seven years as a fictitious member of a rather extreme Left leaning fictitious Administration with a whack job for a fictitious President (Martin Sheen)?

Yes, one of the very few movies where my GF and I can watch together. That was one of the best scenes in the movie.

Isn’t this the guy almost gets his clock cleaned by Al Pacino’s character in the movie “Scent of a Woman” ?

I was in a couple depressions. It's not easy,
he's lying.

The person who said that was 91 year old Margaret Loftus.

ROTFLMAO. Of everything this vacuous, empty headed celebutard said, this was the one thing that stuck out at me.

Irony is lost on liberals. They have neither the intellectual capacity for it, nor the sense of humor to appreciate it.

  1. 2008-91=1917. Perhaps she moved to the U.S. during the 30's and counts the extended "Great Depression" as experienced by the U.S. as separate from that experienced by the rest of the world during 1929-1932.
  2. Her son, Tom Loftus, is a grade A doofus.
  3. One should always look to Hollywood and the world of acting to find direction and insight into who to elect president. Just makes sense.

Bradley Whitford is the husband of Malcolm in the Middle TV mom Jane Kaczmarek.

You're right, thanks, and apologies to the actor.

Margaret is old enough to remember that amongst the least helpful "solutions" to the depression was protectionism, an Obama policy, and an increase in the top tax rate from 24% to 64%.

Good point. I still have no idea what the 2nd depression was that she was talking about.
