McCain Camp Re-Thinking Decision to Not Use Rev. Wright as Wedge in Attacks on Obama
October 20, 2008 3:17 PM
In an interview with Republican talk radio host Hugh Hewitt last Thursday, Rick Davis, campaign chair of McCain-Palin 08, said the campaign is re-thinking Sen. John McCain's earlier decision to not attack Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., on the subject of his controversial former preacher Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
"There is a report in the media, a couple actually, that your campaign is divided over whether or not Jeremiah Wright ought to be an issue in the last three weeks," Hewitt said. "What is the situation? Will Jeremiah Wright be part of the McCain campaigns appeal to people to consider Barack Obama in the last three weeks?"
"Look, John McCain has told us a long time ago before this campaign ever got started, back in May, I think, that from his perspective, he was not going to have his campaign actively involved in using Jeremiah Wright as a wedge in this campaign," Davis said. "Now since then, I must say, when Congressman Lewis calls John McCain and Sarah Palin and his entire group of supporters, fifty million people strong around this country, that were all racists and we should be compared to George Wallace and the kind of horrible segregation and evil and horrible politics that was played at that time, you know, that youve got to rethink all these things.
"And so I think were in the process of looking at how were going to close this campaign," Davis continued. "Weve got 19 days, and were taking serious all these issues."

I hope someone does it, I so damn tired of seeing all Obama commercials from morning till night!
I agree. McCain needs to stick to the issue that works and resonates with people. But the 527s can do some of the heavy lifting for him. It seems to me that last minute undecideds tend not to like negativity from the candidates themselves.
The Cindy McCain smear job in the NYT this weekend was the tipping point.
What? I did not hear a thing about it and i was on FR all weekend.
It’s a simple commercial - use Obama’s own words from his books and then cut to Wright.
They have to use the full Wright quote, though. The part where he goes “Not God Bless America, not God Bless America, GOD DAMN AMERICA.”
They can do a second one with pictures of the outpouring of emotion after 9/11 juxtaposed against “THE CHICKENSSSSSSS are coming home TO ROOST...”
Do both!!
GOD DAMN AMERICA.
Can’t trust him on Wright/Ayers/Plaeger can’t trust him on the economy. A two birder
Nah he is going to attack wright that is the word from one of there field ofices. Remenber this little tidbit not G-D bless America but G-d damn America you will be seeing it shortly
Agree wholeheartedly : Wright, socialism, Ayers, ACORN, Odinga, “bitter clingers” slam....Throw everything at the SOB and hope for the best.
nice guys finish last......
Hit him with everything. Throw in Odinga, too.
I agree, Chet 99. Wright fits if he’s used in the radical-socialist context tied very much to taxes and the implications for our economy. Racial tit-for-tat right now isn’t going to work, and I really don’t understand why Davis has to telegraph what they are or aren’t going to do anyway.
Hammer on taxes, including the effects of not extending Bush’s tax cuts, and on all of the evidence of Obama’s ties to a swarm of radical Marxists in Chicago who, while practically overthrowing our financial system (see ACORN), have been plotting how to overthrow our political system from within for years.
Behind McCain, Outsider in Capital Wanting Back In
RE: “I get the sense McCain is really pissed about Obama going back on his word on public financing. The penalty to Obama may be that McCain goes back on his word on using Rev. Wright.
One other thing. Why is using Rev. Wright racist?”
“Having a spiritual advisor known for saying God D@#N America from the pulpit would be unacceptable for a presidential candidate of any color. It would not matter if the advisor was pink with green polka-dots.”
*************
AGREE! There is nothing more wrong with pointing out Obama spent 20 years in Wright’s church, listening to his frequently spewed hate, than there is in discussing Obama’s long-time associations with the likes of home grown terrorists Ayers and Dohrn, ad nauseum.
The 527’s or McCain’s campaign itself could easily come out with ads that shriek Wright’s “God Da*m America” loudly and clearly, while not even showing Wright’s face at all! We’ve seen it already but we need to HEAR it again!
Completely agree that it doesn’t matter WHAT color Wright is, though — it’s about the message and Zero and wifey listening to it in that “church” for so many years.
Actually, fold Wright into the attack on Obama’s socialism:
A one-minute spot that gives the history of Obama’s connections with the hard-left (Ayers, Wright, Khalidi, ACORN) and crooked Chicago interests (Rezko, Giannoulias), then segues via “Is it any wonder he backed ACORN’s demands to loosen credit standards?” into the subprime mess, and “Is it any wonder he wants to use tax-policy as a means of introducing socialism?” into an attack on the ‘95% get a tax-cut lie”, and ends with something like “Barack Obama, hiding his past so you won’t know what he plans for the future”.
I say him ‘em with both issues.
“Do you want your taxes going to folks who don’t work, pay no taxes, and ‘G D America’? We don’t!”
We’re thinking on the same track, The_Reader_David.
