McCain Camp Re-Thinking Decision to Not Use Rev. Wright as ‘Wedge’ in Attacks on Obama

October 20, 2008 3:17 PM

In an interview with Republican talk radio host Hugh Hewitt last Thursday, Rick Davis, campaign chair of McCain-Palin ’08, said the campaign is re-thinking Sen. John McCain's earlier decision to not attack Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., on the subject of his controversial former preacher Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

"There is a report in the media, a couple actually, that your campaign is divided over whether or not Jeremiah Wright ought to be an issue in the last three weeks," Hewitt said. "What is the situation? Will Jeremiah Wright be part of the McCain campaign’s appeal to people to consider Barack Obama in the last three weeks?"

"Look, John McCain has told us a long time ago before this campaign ever got started, back in May, I think, that from his perspective, he was not going to have his campaign actively involved in using Jeremiah Wright as a wedge in this campaign," Davis said. "Now since then, I must say, when Congressman Lewis calls John McCain and Sarah Palin and his entire group of supporters, fifty million people strong around this country, that we’re all racists and we should be compared to George Wallace and the kind of horrible segregation and evil and horrible politics that was played at that time, you know, that you’ve got to rethink all these things.

"And so I think we’re in the process of looking at how we’re going to close this campaign," Davis continued. "We’ve got 19 days, and we’re taking serious all these issues."

I say: bad call.

The tax/socialism issue is gaining traction. Stick with it.

Too late, morons.

And it’s too late to say you were wrong on not drilling in ANWR, and too late to say you are against amnesty.

You had your chance months ago. Instead, you told your base to shut up.

Actions have consequences.

They are going to call us racists no matter what we do. Heck, we could have Michael Steele at the top of the ticket, and they’d still call him a closet Nazi.

McCain has got to hit Obama hard on Rev. Wright. NOW !!

Flood the airwaves. !!

One more thing he had better hit on is Biden's statement of an international (terrorist ?) attack to test Obama soon after he takes office. IMHO these are two thing that could win the election for him.

He doesn't have to go down that path if he would just say over and over again that Obam;a “spread the wealth” in any language is socialism. And That Biden says Obama’s inexperience will be tested on the World Stage. McCain has all the ammunition he needs to win if he uses it.

Agreed that taxes are a great issue for McCain, but you have different parts of the electorate. You may have people who feel 'the rich should pay more,' but would be scared to hell of someone who was a longtime member of Wright's church.

I think the larger problem is that Wright would give the media an opportunity to throw more baseless 'racism' charges at McCain's campaign and it would put them in the spot of having to defend against those. At least with the tax issue the story is that Obama will be raising taxes, he might be raising yours, and he looks at taxpayers as people who he can milk for money to give to the lazy and stupid.

Wright makes a lot of sense as an ancillary issue, hit on by 527s in battleground states.

I think they should use Wright non-stop in the last 5 days (10/30 - 11/3) or so. If they are saving money for the final blitz, Wright should be used in it.
Not using it now will increase the explosiveness of the attack.

But since McCain wants to lose nicely, and be a good chap, he will stay away from Wright. Too bad...

The Cindy McCain smear job in the NYT this weekend was the tipping point. McCain has been Mr. Nice Guy, and look what it got him: Nada.

I hope McCain goes nuclear on Wright. The media will whine. The Obama campaign will cry “racist!”

But the Obamabots have already done their worst.

If smart they would use the piece, I think Hannity has, that has Obama speaking of who Wright is to him then Wright spewing his hate and alternating. It’s great.

There is no reason for McCain and Sarah to be fighting with one hand tied behind their back.

If they aren't going to get any credit for being “good guys” for not using Wright, and if they are going to be called racist no matter what they do, then what's the point?

It's a legitimate question - you talk about Ayers, you talk about Wright, you talk about “Spreading the Wealth,” and taking the totality of all the circumstances, you're left with the question: Is Obama as moderate as he claims to be? Or is he the wolf in sheep's clothing?

Wright is a big dot that needs to be connected to Ayers and ACORN and the rest... If McCain is resistant, let Sarah do it. She believes it is a valid issue and is willing to put the effort in to sell it as such.

Socialism/tax issue is gaining traction.

But Wright is so disgusting.

Not sure if anyone cares, though (that doesn’t already know).
