TOLEDO, Ohio (AFP) With John McCain and Barack Obama already swapping accusations of widespread voter fraud, experts warn that a bitter and protracted fight could ensue if the race to the White House is decided by a narrow margin.
The legal battle over election rules has already made it all the way to the Supreme Court as Republicans fight to block potentially false registrations from being validated and Democrats struggle to prevent voter disenfranchisement.
Compounding the problem is the decentralized US electoral system, which hands often partisan local officials the power to make rules and maintain the voter registration rolls.
"I'm hoping it's not close," said Richard L. Hasen, a professor who specializes in election law at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.
"I am certain there will be problems on election day."

Is the Pope Catholic?
Yes.
And if the liberals win, the next election will be even worse...
The first stolen election in my memory was the Kennedy theft from Nixon. Thanks to the corruption in Chicago!!!
It must be made abundantly clear, riots and civil unrest are not the exclusive domain of the “obama demographic”
It is being stolen as we write.
Does a bear crap in the woods?
Does a frog have a water tight arse?
Why do you think voting has already started with absentee voters? Why do you think the federal government is giving grants to counties to install electronic voting machines? Why do you think they teach ‘government’ in high school instead of civics these days?
“Compounding the problem is the decentralized US electoral system...”
Ah yes, what we need is clearly a CENTRALIZED electoral system that puts all the power in the hands of a few people. That would be MUCH harder to systematically screw with!
With upwards of 40 million in this country illegally, it’s a safe bet that U.S. elections are being and have been compromised and undermined for some period of time now.
I agree.
Naa...we all know democrats are honorable, peaceful, tolerant people who are fair in all of their proceedings...:-)
First the US would have to become a Democracy. Last time I checked, it was still a Republic, but we could loose it.
Nixon becomes President 8 years later, and Gore widens a rift which will probably never be healed.
Proof that the Dems care more for themselves then for the country.
Everything about this election cycle is strange.. i.e. coo-coo..
Which voting machine company is it that Chavez owns? He does own one of them. ... And in which states are those amchines used?
Like in 1948 or 1960?
democrat concern about disinfranchisement doesn’t exist if you’re legal citizen. What republicans are concerned about is fraud voters that are not legal to vote
what democrats seem to want is voter fraud to occur, as every attempt to have stricker laws against fraud are rejected by them.
It’s funny you mention 1948, because having just read on it, I would have almost considered it similar to the current election, only the parties reversed.
