The new Democratic Party: The party's wealthy elites no longer represent the working class
San Diego Union Tribune ^ | October 19, 2008 | UNION-TRIBUNE EDITORIAL

Posted on 10/19/2008 8:10:29 PM PDT by BAW

What happened to the Democratic Party? Just a few generations ago, the party of Franklin Roosevelt went to bat for the little guy, the common man, the everyday Joe the plumber.

Not anymore. Now, the wealthy elites who run the Democratic Party have declared war on working-class Americans while pretending to defend them against greedy and heartless Republicans.

Those would be the same Republicans whose vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, doesn't just talk about working-class people but actually embodies one and yet has been savaged by liberals.

And those would be the same Republicans who have devised a tax plan that might just appeal to “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher, the Ohio resident who dared to confront Barack Obama over the unfairness of his tax plan.

In a candid moment that could well lose him some votes, Obama acknowledged to Wurzelbacher that he intended, if elected president, to take the wealth of those making more than 250,000 per year and “spread it around” to others making less. That wasn't very smart, and the Obama campaign knows it.

So they're trying to change the subject by making Joe the Plumber the issue. They're doing so, with a little help from their friends in the news media and labor unions, by digging into Joe's background in search of something embarrassing. Already, the pro-Obama forces have found that Joe Wurzelbacher owes back taxes, doesn't have a plumbing license, and may not be registered to vote. And there may be more to come.

That will teach Joe to keep quiet. Let's hope the country learns a lesson as well – about what the Democratic Party used to be and what it has become.

it is instructive that the party that says it’s for the working person

Remember when George HW Bush didn’t know what a scanner was at the supermarket and the press excoriated him. What OB did with Joe was a thousand times worse than that.

Try to explain this to the union members who believe their leadership. I worked for 35 years in a very unionized job and when you got the guys one on one they expressed republican ideals but when asked why the don’t vote the response usually was, “Reagan fired the air traffic controllers to break the union.” No reasoning could get through this line of reasoning.

You mean someone figured out that the ‘rat party isn’t run by a bunch of average Joes? What was the first clue; when at the primary debates Obama was the poorest person onstage?

As a native of San Diego for decades, we are the largest Red County in CA along with being the largest city in the U.S. with a Republican Mayor

Yup, he undressed himself in front of everybody, and now the press is trying to cover his bare ass by blaming Joe the Plumber.

They have to find somebody to scapegoat. The evil Republicans aren't cutting it anymore, so now they plan to blame US for all the ills of the world! It's the fault of those greedy voters who want to keep the money they EARN...yeah right.

Time to toss every Democrat out of Congress. Joe the Plumber is a Godsend.

I hope you’re right, nufsed! I’m no fan of McCain, but the polls are all showing Obama leading.

The Democratic elites don’t like any of us “little people” who don’t want to be herded and bullied around by them. They love those who patronize their welfare programs, thus giving their welfare bureaucrats secure jobs. They love those who will vote for them no matter what as long as whatever favors they rely on come their way.

However, they can’t stand people like Joe the Plumber who aren’t wealthy or powerful but even so just want to be left alone to make their own way. “Who the hell do they think they are?!!!” is their shocked response, though they try not to say it out loud.

Harry S. Truman is turning in his grave at this Democratic party. I was once a registered Democrat, but after 9-11, I saw how the party turned on my country and that’s when I changed.

That old media-hyped myth about George H W Bush and the scanner just doesn’t want to die. Read the real story and pass it on.

The Democrats have never represented the “workign class.” they represent teh non-working classes. They need people not working so they’ll be dependent on government and therefore beholden to Democrats.

The worst thing that could happen to liberals is to wake up one day in the world tehy say tehy want. Nobody would nbeed them and they couldn’t function in a world like that.

That’s why they will always oppose any measures that actually help people.

The interesting thing is that it took a confrontation with a real salt-of-the-earth blue collar plumber (Joe) to squeeze the truth out of Barak Marx!

Barack is so used to hanging with liberals and academic elites that when confronted by a real tough-guy blue collar guy who was basically telling him to f... off. Obama was intimidated by Joe, so he lost his usual suave veneer and blurted out the truth that he always hides (that he believes in spreading the wealth around).

No reasoning could get through this line of reasoning

Let's see if this would work better: No reasoning could get through this line of reasoning type of emotion.

That was not expression of thinking, that was expression of feeling (empathy, solidarity). Clear-thinking people don't even entertain voting for or supporting Democrats... unless they have a lot to gain from it, as many rich people do and as many became much richer that way.

To paraphrase Willie Sutton, government is where the money is, and there is no need to rob what you own - you just "distribute" or "spread" the wealth.
