Satisfaction with American Congress Plummets
October 12, 2008
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Adults in the United States are particularly critical of the way the House of Representatives and the Senate are doing their job, according to a review of four recent public opinion polls. In a survey by Opinion Research Corporation released by CNN, 23 per cent of respondents approve of the way Congress is performing.
The approval rating for the U.S. legislative branch stands at 15 per cent in a study by CBS News, and 13 per cent in polls by Opinion Dynamics for Fox News and Hart/Newhouse for the Wall Street Journal and NBC News.
American voters renewed the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate in November 2006. In January 2007, the Democratic Party took control of the lower house for the first time since 1994, with 233 lawmakers. A victory for the Democratic candidates for the Senate in Montana and Virginia also gave the party a majority in the upper house. Democratic California congresswoman Nancy Pelosi became the first female speaker of the House.
Since last year, defaults on so-called subprime mortgagescredit given to high-risk borrowershave caused volatility in domestic and financial markets and raised concerns that the U.S. economy could fall into a recession.
On Sept. 29, the House of Representatives rejected a proposal for the federal government to purchase up to $700 billion U.S. in assets from finance companies in a 228-205 vote. On Oct. 1, a modified version of the bill was approved by the Senate in a 74-25 vote.
On Oct. 9, Pelosi called for a stimulus package to create jobs, saying, "We may have to go back into session before the next Congress. We have some very harsh decisions to make and some of them cant wait until January. What we cant wait for is a stimulus package."
American voters will elect a new president, and renew the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate on Nov. 4.
It only took a few dems in key positions of oversight turning their heads as financial institutions fattened their coffers.
The results are horrendous for all of us.
Isn’t it only fair that those key dems now pay along with the rest of us for their incompetence and greed and own abuse of power? and pay not with the losses of their retirement accounts like millions are now doing, but to pay with their jobs as well as many also are doing.
I would like a November surprise in the two Houses. Only those with a servant’s heart are allowed.
nothing but buying votes...name one other time when she went 'back into session' for anything? She usually does just the opposite.
If we don't vote straight ticket - we are going to send McC/Sarah to DC hamstrung - and our country.
If we let them get the 60% - they WILL turn us over to Socialism. The Obamaination is just a figurehead. There is no more democrat party - they are Socialists
“I would like a November surprise in the two Houses. Only those with a servants heart are allowed.”
From your keyboard to God’s eyes...
Enough to give you nightmares. Pure evil...and people will return them to power.
Good Lord. I wish there were still a frontier somewhere...
In addition to the broad question of “how is the House..” and “how is the Senate..”, the pollsters should add specific questions such as:
How do you rate the performance of Nancy Pelosi?
How do you rate the performance of Harry Reid?
How do you rate Barney Frank’s handling of policies regarding sub-prime loans?
Should Christopher Dodd have received a mortgage rate lower than was available to you?
Should Barack Obama have received a mortgage rate lower than was available to you?
Holy $hit, ya think so?!?!?
Until the sheeple are pi$$ed enough to turn out their own congresscritter, this survey is just a bunch of horse hockey. In the meantime, stock up on MREs.
Must be graded on a curve or the Dem/Repub ratio is 4:1 weighted. We Freepers give congress a ZerObama approval rating.
“good lord. i wish there were still a frontier somewhere...”
you said it.
This needs to be a major talking point in the remainder of days before the election.
If Obama wins, the Rats will likely have an actual or virtual SUPERMAJORITY. I.e., NO LIMITS or CHECKS AND BALANCES on what they can do at all.
Does that sound like a good idea?
Spread the word.
