In an address delivered on October 17, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput stated that ''Prof. Douglas Kmiec has a strong record of service to the Church and the nation in his past. But I think his activism for Senator Barack Obama, and the work of Democratic-friendly groups like Catholics United and Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, have done a disservice to the Church, confused the natural priorities of Catholic social teaching, undermined the progress pro-lifers have made, and provided an excuse for some Catholics to abandon the abortion issue instead of fighting within their parties and at the ballot box to protect the unborn.''

From the letter Little Murders:

Of course, these are simply my personal views as an author and private citizen.

Admittedly, this is buried towards the end of the letter. He is stating these are his personal views, and he feels he needs to make these statements as a private citizen and as the author of the book Render Unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living Our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life.

But it is important to state that Charles J. Chaput, OFMcap, is not speaking for the Archdiocese of Denver.

There may be threats to the Archdiocese of Denver because of this letter... That is why I am downplaying the title Archbishop...

That is the point I am tyring to make.

That’s a great email. They need to say vote pro life or get out!!! Especially this election - Obama has already said what he wants to return to.

Bishop Chaput used to live here in Rapid City,S.D. (right before he moved to Denver.) He was and is an amazing man. He loved to cook and was in several of my cooking classes. Many of my students had no idea he was a priest. (He didn’t wear the collar to the classes.) But he had such a glow about him and a great presence. He has a remarkable wit and kindness for all. I’m a Lutheran, not Catholic, but he affected me deeply.
