Little Murders [Bishop Chaput Slams Obama on Abortion & Blasts Kmiec for Misleading Catholics]

In an address delivered on October 17, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput stated that ''Prof. Douglas Kmiec has a strong record of service to the Church and the nation in his past. But I think his activism for Senator Barack Obama, and the work of Democratic-friendly groups like Catholics United and Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, have done a disservice to the Church, confused the natural priorities of Catholic social teaching, undermined the progress pro-lifers have made, and provided an excuse for some Catholics to abandon the abortion issue instead of fighting within their parties and at the ballot box to protect the unborn.''

Tell him to keep fighting the good fight, of faith.

I did. And I told him about our site, that we have thousands of members who support him in his fight, and that we will all pray for him.

Dear diamond6,

I'm inspired by the example of your e-mail of support to Archbishop of Denver. I've written my own e-mail to him, as a result, offering our support and prayers for him.

I encourage every poster to follow diamond6’s example and write Archbishop Chaput - and any other decent Catholic bishops - a short note of support and promise of prayer.

Here is Archbishop Chaput's public e-mail address: shepherd@archden.org.

Things are too far gone in our country for the normal play of politics to retrieve our country from the abyss. We can't cease working, politically, culturally, socially, but none of it will have effect except through the supernatural grace, through the supernatural miracles of God. We must all rededicate ourselves to prayer, beseeching God that He will deliver our nation from the scourge of legalized baby butchery.

Thank you very much, diamond6, for your good example.

Take me off your ping list.

38 pings in 12 hours with many minutes apart is ridiculous. I can’t even find my individual to and from replies.

Also, you might be interested in looking up John Paul II's (the Great) Encyclical Centesimus Annus ("Hundredth Year") from '91. He wrote it as a follow up of Catholic social teaching for the hundredth year anniversary of Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum.

I’m wondering how long it’ll take for the press to start “vetting” Chaput.

Indeed, I always have considered that the pro-life movement is filled with those who are truly the prophets in our day and in our land. They do what the prophets in the Old Testament did. Challenging their brothers and sisters in "the Land" that they loved so much back to God's Law, which they loved even more. Oftentimes a very conflicting agenda for them. Hating the evil that their fellow "chosen people" Israelites did in breaking the Covenant with God, but loving them all the same because they were God's chosen. I think of Jonah initially, not scared but as a patriot, trying to run away from his mission which he knew would probably not bode well for the Israelites. (The Assyrians, after penance, indeed were used by God to attack and bring down the Israelites.)

Linking up your "scourge of legalized baby butchery" with the previous "cretinous turd" [I'm shocked! I don't remember you ever using that kind of language!] who "sold his soul to Satan", I'm reminded that Satan, in mocking mimicry of God, requires a sacrifice for his "worship". And people throughout our country can't figure out that that is what our legalized baby butchery really is - a "sacramental sacrifice" to Satan.

We need prayer indeed. And fasting.

MaryAnne, you are so right. Most of the bishops are either totally corrupt or simply incompetent wimps, to be frank. Fortunately this same group are mostly nearing retirement. And Sambi is not going to follow the old boy system when he recommends appointments to Benedict, and Benedict knows the scoop on these guys anyway. He is not the sweetheart John Paul was, he’s had his eye on these men for 3 decades. The good bishops are in the minority now, but strong and coming on stronger as great leaders like Burke (now in the Vatican, what a loss to the US, but a gain for the Church overall), Chaput, Bruskewitz, Vasa, are leading the way. I hope as younger ones come in with these examples, the tide will finally turn.

You rightfully expect your bishop to teach, govern and sanctify, their mission from Christ Himself, and many have failed in that duty. The laity and protestants have carried the ball for the prolife cause. If the bishops had been true to their mission from God, abortion would now be illegal in this country. There is no more powerful moral force (or perhaps political and financial too) than the Catholic Church when Catholics are UNITED. But the shepherds have betrayed the flock and sown seeds of confusion, doubt and even heresy.

Thank God the Holy Spirit has listened to the prayers of people like your grandmother, that is probably the only reason we have been spared. Our Country is on the brink of abandoning God, at which point God will abandon the USA, and it is the Catholic Church that can save us. If we get spiritually on track, there’s a tremendous momentum, and our protestant brethren and even most Jews, even moderate Muslims, stand with us on the basic values, and then we can turn back the tide of evil from the left.

Are you sure you meant to post that here? It refers to Mahoney, a Florida Congressman, not Mahony, the Cardinal, and sort of confusing given the context of this thread being mostly to criticize bishops. Mahony is pretty bad, perhaps sincere but quite misguided, but I don’t believe we have any evidence he has ever broken his vow of celibacy.

And if they persist, the “A” word, and if they publicly defy and persist in support of abortion, the “E” word. Apostasy, Excommunication....hey these Catholic abbreviations can be fun, we could almost develop our own code language...oh yeah, we have it, Latin.

I’m stunned. That is amazingly candid. This guy is the new Burke.

Randall Terry (Operation Rescue) took the bishops to task for their pathetically weak statement (it seems Bishop Chaput is referring to “Faithful Citizenship” which has been successfully used by the left to convince ignorant Catholics they can vote for Obama). Those interested in Randall’s “open letter” sent to every US bishop is at humbleplea.com.

Also, what Americans don’t realize is the USCCB has NO ECCLESIAL MORAL AUTHORITY. We are each answerable to our own bishop in OUR diocese, and he has authority ONLY in his diocese. If they all get together and make a statement, it is not morally or theologically binding, as would for example, be a statement from the Holy Father. It is also necessarily weak, because it’s a product of committes, this is why the USCCB is NOT a governing body, they have NO jurisdiction over you!

This is why Mr. Terry, one of the greatest leaders in the prolife movement (and a convert to Catholicism along the way) rightly says that voting principles should be based on Pope John Paul’s encyclical, Evangelium Vitae.

Very nice idea, I encourage the opposite. Write to your own bishop and if he’s one of the lax ones, tell him you would like to be hearing stronger, clearer statements about Church teaching on life issues, from the pulpit, from his Diocesan newspaper, and from him personally when national situations demand a response. You want to know if he agrees with Archbishop Chaput on taking a strong stand publicly, because the the USCCB documents have been equicoval, weak and confusing. Also ask does your diocese have an Office of Prolife Activities and who is the director, how many are on staff, and what is the budget? The answer may shock you.

Dear baa39,

“Write to your own bishop and if he’s one of the lax ones, tell him you would like to be hearing stronger, clearer statements about Church teaching on life issues, from the pulpit, from his Diocesan newspaper, and from him personally when national situations demand a response.”

I think that's largely a waste of time. My own bishop, Archbishop Wuerl of Washington, is an old man, set in his ways. He is a part-time Catholic and a full-time Democrat, and notices from his flock that he is off-base have been and will be ignored. This is, after all, the bishop who found himself entirely unable to do anything about the coronation Mass of her satanic majesty, Queen Nancy I. His answer to her coronation Mass was that it was being held at Trinity University in Washington, DC, and he had no authority over this independent institution.

What a lie. He failed to mention that no priest may say Mass publicly within the Archdiocese of Washington without faculties from the Archbishop of Washington. But to have put a stop to it would have been to offend his true mother. He sucks at the teat of the Party of Satan, and the milk is drugged and addictive.

I'd rather spend my time encouraging those who are carrying the flag forward than waste my time trying to persuade lying old men, firmly ensconced in their crimes.

Sad to say, but in a case like that, you are probably right. He is outwardly an elegant and smooth guy and the “average” Catholic probably does not realize he’s a problem. He’s in a safe place of power connected with other powerful people in and out of the Church who share his views. These old leftist bishops have surrounded themselves for years with feminist and progressive sycophants who keep the leftist programs and attitudes going in the seats of authority. Boy will these bishops be surprised in a few years when our country is under the New Secularism of Obama, Christianity is outlawed, Sharia Law is legal, and Human Rights Commissions are sending Bishops to jail due to the “intolerant” views of Catholicism.

baa39,

I think this is an excellent idea. If the bishop of our diocese is weak on this issue, we should let him know where we stand, especially since there is a US Bishops’ Conference that is going to be discussing this very issue next month. Whether they are ensconced or not, they are the ones that will be making this important decision, so we need to flood them with emails like we would any politician.

I would recommend a bilateral approach. We should give encouragement to Chaput and don’t forget Bishop Robert Hermann of Missouri and others to give them strength. But we should also gnaw at the consciences of bishops who are weak kneed, so that they can somehow hear what I believe is a message of God.

I don’t think that it is a waste of time to email the weak ones. We need to make our voices heard! If nobody says anything, then they’ll just listen to themselves. I also think it’s important to know who’s on our side, and who’s not.

This is a war we must win. Let’s use all ammunition at our disposal!
