“I’m pretty confident I did not betray my father’s ghost,” he said. “I will sleep soundly tonight.”

While Dad is rolling over in his grave!

“That was one of the things that made WFB so damn interesting. He took unpredictable points of view.”

Unpredictable, maybe. Assinine, never.

I'm relieved that his logorrheic, navel-gazing back page essays about loons on the nearby pond will no longer be wasting valuable real estate in the National Review. He's a poorly played Shakespearean tragedy in his love/hate attempts to imitate, but never emulate, his father's still-unparalleled wit and articulation. Good riddance.

WFB would never support a socialist...particularly one who is actively undermining the Republic. A black conservative president...sure, why not....

He is just bitter because he got his dad’s shoes out and they make him look like he has clown feet.

I talked to a friend of his from college

He stated that Chris was Apolitical and showed no interest at all in politics until his father encouraged him to work for a campaign.

He also stated that Chris has a tendency of hanging out and being chummy with Washington DC insiders and wouldn't be surprised if he showed more loyalty to them than his own party.

Glad to see him off the back page of NR - he was much too enamored of his own (mediocre) writing skills.

I miss Steyn, I miss Flo-King, too - but Steyn was always the first thing I turned to when the new issue showed up.

“He is, it seems clear enough, what the historical moment seems to be calling for.”

This kind of attitude usually helps demagogues and dictators rise to power. Good thinking, Chris (not).

You claim that your articles against the McCain campaign are written out of some concern that true conservative principles are dying, yet you express your disagreement by cheering on a man who supports out-in-the-open socialism.

I believe that these pundits see Obama ushering in a new era of socialism for the next few decades and they want to be on the inside rather than the outside. It's more fun to be attending cocktail parties than being the voice crying out in the wilderness

By pointing out that NR accepted his resignation offer “rather quickly,” Buckly betrays the fact that he had meant his offer in vain, as a cosmetic gesture, a bluff.

Now he hypocritically complains that his bluff was called.

“Buckley’s defection comes as an increasing number of moderate conservative pundits come out against the McCain-Palin ticket.”

There is no such thing as a “moderate conservative”. You’re either conservative or you’re not. Saying that you’re a moderate conservative is like saying that you’re only partially pregnant. There is no gray area where conservatism is concerned.

No conservative could even consider endorsing a socialist “New Party” far-left “progressive” mole like Obama. Ergo, Chris Buckley is no conservative and should not be associated with NR.

Same goes for Kathleen Parker, Peggy Noonan, and any other fools who are trying to help get Obama elected.

caveat: I can at least understand the arguments of real conservatives who recognize what Obama represents but hope for a Reagan-like reaction against 1 term of Obama.... though I think that’s much too risky a course for a variety of reasons. Still, I can at least understand conservatives who want to advocate the Carter-to-Reagan scenario.

But I can’t begin to understand anyone who pretends to be conservative yet wants to boost Obama and/or tear down Sarah Palin (which are two sides of the same coin, two related tactics).

Happy to know he is sleeping soundly tonight.
Is his bastard son who he ignores and refuses to act as a father doing the same?

What a jerk.

I hate to question someone’s motives, but the more I think about what Chris Buckley has done, the more it seems like just a stunt to win favor with the liberal establishment. Chris was a comic novelist who almost never publicly expressed any political opinions. For years his only association with National Review (other than being his father’s son) was to speak at their anniversary dinners every five years. Suddenly he starts writing the back page column for NR during during Mark Steyn’s hiatus. As soon as Steyn returns from hiatus, he writes an endorsement of Obama, resigns from NR, and whines to the press about how nasty the right-wingers are being to him.

What, exactly, did Buckley expect would be the reaction to his endorsement of Obama?? He knew *exactly* what the reaction would be and did this to gain street cred from his liberal elite buddies. If Ralph Nader’s son wrote a column for The Nation and then edorsed McCain, I’m sure their readers would be furious as well.

How can someone call himself a conservative and then—because Bush, McCain, and the GOP aren’t perfect—endorse a leftist who agrees with conservatives on NOTHING?
