And with this, JTP has officially been name-checked by all four candidates today. The way the video’s cut, picking up mid-sentence, it sounds like Obama’s sneering at Wurzelbacher for being a plumber — “A plumber is the guy he’s fighting for” — to the great amusement of the crowd. The full quote:
“He’s trying to suggest that a plumber is the guy he’s fighting for,” Obama said. “How many plumbers you know that are making a quarter-million dollars a year?” Obama said McCain was misleading voters by proposing tax plans that favor the rich while criticizing an Obama tax plan that would raise taxes only on people making more than $250,000 a year, just 5 percent of all taxpayers.
They’re laughing at McCain for claiming to be a friend of the middle class, not at Wurzelbacher for being middle class. Given the Bittergate fiasco and his image as an elitist, would The One really crap on a profession as quintessentially blue-collar as plumbing in a public setting, especially with the election so close? In context, I’m not even sure that the line about making a quarter mil a year is aimed at Wurzelbacher. I take his point to be not that JTP is lying about aspiring to make that much, but that even if he succeeds, he’d be such an extreme outlier that Maverick can’t fairly use him as a proxy for plumbers (or the middle class) generally.

John McCain on CSPAN right now, Alfred E Smith Dinner. He is going great. Just joked about how Joe the Plumber just got a lucrative contract with someone famous to work on all 7 of his houses.
A plumber making $25 an hour working 2000 hours makes $50,000;and a plumber who owns a shop employing several others takes in a lot more.Probably Joe meant his projected shop gross income,not the net after taxes.
this is totally off the subject. Joe Biden’s eyes are trully freaky from the plastic surgery. Today when he was disssing Joe the Plumber in an interview. he looked almost chinese. he could be on that website called awful plastic surgery. it is trully bizarre. how can you take him seriously when he looks like Joan what’s her name with the jewelry on QVC????

I am really p*ssed here. We own a small repair company. If we didn’t gross that much we couldn’t have employees and still pay for materials.
He is laughing at the American worker. Not everyone has a glorious job like Senator, but if your toilet is leaking they seem pretty darn fabulous. This is how he sees the manual laborer as something to mock. I certainly hope McCain defends this man.

I expect plumber trucks all over the US with McCain or anti Obama stickers shortly. It could spread to truckers, contractors, landscapers, all kinds of salt of the earth workers in this great land.

I can’t imagine someone who dares want to be President openly laughing at American workers and leads his crowd to do the same. I am shaking I am so angry.
Obama doesn’t get it. The American dream isn’t about sitting on your butt and getting a check. It’s about working hard (like a plumer) dreaming about what could be, working hard to make it happen and achieve the riches that you worked hard for. He doesn’t get it. The point about the Joe the Plumer is not that he is making 250 000 a year. The point is that’s where he wants to be (and beyond). All you are telling his is, don’t bother because once you get to this point I’m going to kick you down a few notches and give your money to someone who didn’t do all the work you did. Obama still doesn’t get it. He really isn’t like “us” (And by us I mean American’s and people all around the world who dream big and work hard)
I actually think this video can be every bit as devastating as the one that wasn’t planned. He is basically laughing at anyone working person who thinks they can one day may it. It may shock him but the goal of American’s really isn’t just to make due forever. Some people dream big and Obama is basically saying, don’t bother (How many X do you know making Y).

someone should work to get the plumbers union(s to protest Obama's insult of all of those works in America, and de-endorse him. it is a long shot, but if it could be pulled of, WOW what a coup. maybe the grassroots plumbers could rise up with this insult and put pressure on their union leadership to at least suspend an endorsement of Obama, even if they did not endorse McCain. that would be INCREDIBLE DAMAGE.
