Joe the Plumber said Thursday he doesn't have a license and doesn't need one. Joe Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, the nickname Republican John McCain bestowed on him during Wednesday's presidential debate, said he works for a small plumbing company that does residential work. Because he works for someone else, he doesn't need a license, he said.

The media guys crying about this....have no idea how the license business works...thats very obvious. Only the owners have to be a real licensed guy. If you figure the yearly license fee the state charges....you really don’t need the license unless you buy the business....then you face the Obama “solution”.

He’s an “employee” who works for someone else. His american dream is to work for himself (for which he would need a license). The socialist media can’t quite understand that.
He didn't. Under Ohio trades law, only the proprietor of a plumbing business must have a license. The owner then assumes liability for the work done by his employees -- who don't need a license.
In Ohio, the license is essentially about accepting liability, not about proven plumbing skills. It ensures that he hires people who know how to plumb.
Seeing as how the usual question Obama gets from the Round Heeled Media is "Explain to us, again, how wonderful you are!...", this may be the first hard question Obama has gotten in this campaign. And he blew it.

One of my sons has a friend who is an assistant plumber. Getting a license is very hard, because it’s a closed union that doesn’t want to admit too many people.
Anyway, he works as a plumber’s assistant, and if he puts in enough time he may one day be able to get his own license.
I was born in a hospital. That doesn’t make me a doctor.
And he probably drinks beer leaning against the bed of his truck while talking to his buddies after work.

CHAPTER 4740: CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY LICENSING BOARD 4740.01 Construction industry licensing board definitions. As used in this chapter:
(A) “License” means a license the Ohio construction industry licensing board issues to an individual as a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning contractor, refrigeration contractor, electrical contractor, plumbing contractor, or hydronics contractor.
(B) “Contractor” means any individual or business entity that satisfies both of the following:
(1) For compensation, directs, supervises, or has responsibility for the means, method, and manner of construction, improvement, renovation, repair, or maintenance on a construction project with respect to one or more trades and who offers, identifies, advertises, or otherwise holds out or represents that the individual or business entity is permitted or qualified to perform, direct, supervise, or have responsibility for the means, method, and manner of construction, improvement, renovation, repair, or maintenance with respect to one or more trades on a construction project;
(2) Performs or employs tradespersons who perform construction, improvement, renovation, repair, or maintenance on a construction project with respect to the contractor’s trades.
(C) “Licensed trade” means a trade performed by a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning contractor, a refrigeration contractor, an electrical contractor, a plumbing contractor, or a hydronics contractor.
(D) “Tradesperson” means an individual employed by a contractor who engages in construction, improvement, renovation, repair, or maintenance of buildings or structures without assuming responsibility for the means, method, or manner of that construction, improvement, renovation, repair, or maintenance.
(E) “Construction project” means a construction project involving a building or structure subject to Chapter 3781. of the Revised Code and the rules adopted under that chapter, but not an industrialized unit or a residential building as defined in section 3781.06 of the Revised Code.
