Ayers is not locked up because the Hoover Era FBI used illegal wiretaps to gather information, the judge threw the whole case out on that fact.

Why isnt Ayers in prison?? The charges were dismissed on a technicality. Some kind of prosecutor misconduct. IIRC Bernardine served seven months.
I would imagine what really happened is that Ayers' very rich father found him the best lawyers in town and they pulled the rabbit out of the hat for him.
