Thus, learning English in China is no longer just important. It is the bare minimum for any serious student. Not learning English here would be tantamount to not studying math or science.Beyond that, Chinese students who want to use their English to further their career will have to do more than just become familiar with the language. They will have to become fluent in it because there is now simply too much competition. English speakers are a 'dime a dozen' in China and companies, especially foreign ones, can now be much pickier when they hire their English speaking staff members.

China is now saturated with English training centers and programs. It already has more English speakers than any other country. The government has been very welcoming of this English boom. Why? There could be many reasons but I guess that with so many English speakers around, it will be easier to dominate the world someday...a scary thought...

Please fix the title. It should be “Engrish”. Do they teach the seven dirty words first?

China and ALL other countries in the world. Please take note that knowing English will not be sufficient for you to come and be successful in this great country anymore!

Spanish language has creeped into every segment of American society and it could be that you need to know Spanish equally if not more to even compete in the job market.

It is unfair, because English has been and should be the language of this country.

In fact, there should be a constitutional amendments that declare English not only the national language but the official language of the USA.

Along with that, we need to make Judeao-Christianity the national and official religion. All other religions should be practiced in homes but cannot creep up to change the society on a scale that is happening as we speak.

This has nothing to do with freedom of religion and speech but has to do with national identity.

All countries should have that right and should declare themselves for a national and business religion and language.

And one more thing, if a community wants to build a mosque or a temple in this country, they first need to get a permission to build a church in their country of origin.

Now that is a fair treatment! Let me also declare that these are sentiments of a non-christian whose first language is not English.

That’s ‘Engrish’, yes? I’ve got to tell ya. The Chinese I work with either speak fairly understandable English, or are completely incomprehensible (to me at least - others either understand them, or pretend to understand them.)

I may have to move to China if Obama is elected. After a couple of years under him, America will be less free and less capitalist than China. Plus, after he throws open the U.S. borders, there’ll be more English speakers over there.

Good thing we in America are very serious, focused, long term in our outlooked, prepared, and doing the same thing on a mass scale, developing a very foreign language-savvy population to take on the world and not shrink from it.

This will be a boon to all aspects; missionaries, military, overeas business/jobs, intelligence.

Overseas markets will be even more important in the very near future as domestic markets and growth rate goes sour, Democrat OR Republican in office (worse with the Democrats).

People are about to find out how important these skills will be.

One of the few intelligent observations I’ve seen in a while!
A foreign language course should/must start with learning English.

English is the lingua franca throughout Asia. That is particularly true in commerce. No one can do business in the Orient without a command of English.

The Japanese have had a program for many years now where they bring in recent college grads from English speaking countries to teach in their public schools, starting in 3rd grade, and intensifying through high school. Clever people, those Japanese.

The Chinese system is ad hoc. Some who went for the Japanese program transition over to China to teach English.

In the US we’re lucky if our kids graduating from high school can speak/write proper English. Go figure.

The sons of Nippon and the third Reich and the Soviets were also big on English. The overlords always want to be able to speak to the surfs.

not Farsi as the Persians aren’t so all pervasive. English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, French and maybe Russian are the “global languages”
