Sea of red to greet Palin in Scranton
Times Leader (Wilkes-Barre PA) ^ | 10/14/08 | Bill O'Boyle

When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin walks into the Riverfront Sports Complex in Scranton today, she will see red.

And that’s a good thing if you are a supporter of the Republican ticket of Ariz. Sen. John McCain and Palin.

An e-mail sent from the McCain-Palin campaign urges those attending to wear red to the rally.

“We want to flood the venue with red to show our strength and determination to turn Pennsylvania red on Nov. 4,” the e-mail stated.

Red is the color used by political pundits to depict which states are Republican and blue is used to designate Democratic areas.

Carol Oleski, director of the Scranton office of Democrats for McCain, said the level of enthusiasm building up to Palin’s arrival is “unbelievable.”

“Absolutely, we will all be wearing red,” Oleski said. “We were told 10,000 tickets would be available for the event and they are going out fast. I expect a majority, if not all of them, will go.”

The Riverfront Sports Complex, depending on how it is configured, could hold up to 12,000 people.

Oleski said people from all areas have been calling for tickets. She said requests have come in from New York, New Jersey, Pottstown, Allentown and even California.

“Some people are actually flying in for this event,” Oleski said. “Most of the ticket requests have come from surrounding counties, but I expect a lot of people from out of the area to be here.”

Oleski said Palin’s visit has excited the volunteers in the office who she said have long awaited the Alaska governor’s arrival.

“We are all glad that Gov. Palin is giving this area the opportunity to see and hear her,” Oleski said. “We feel this area is extremely critical to the outcome of this election.”

Doors to the Palin rally open at 11 a.m. It is unknown exactly what time Palin will address the crowd.

Staunch Hillary Clinton supporter Lynette Long, a Bethesda, Md. psychologist, addressed a group at the Scranton office of Democrats for McCain on Monday.

Long, a vocal opponent of the Democratic caucus process that resulted in the nomination of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, has become an avid supporter of the McCain-Palin ticket.

Long believes the efforts produced invalid results in the caucus states and the nomination of Obama as the Democratic candidate for the presidency is “against the will of the people.”

Long has now endorsed the McCain-Palin ticket.

“I believe McCain is winning and will win the election.”

I also believe this. Obama is SOOO bad, and obviously so, that I think people will avoid voting for him. If Obama does win, I think it’ll be a sign that God is wrapping things up for America — maybe even Earth.

I hear ya Mr. Silverback. Of course abortion is a serious issue and I’m glad he is listening to his conscience. However, the McCain/Feingold campaign finance reform bill is in direct contravention of the Constitution. And McCain’s immigration position is beyond ludicrous. I do not agree with him on the Wall Street and lending institution bail out.

Having said that, McCain did pick Gov. Palin. Therefore, I will vote his ticket. But my vote is really for Palin.

Here’s a thought that’s been kicking about in my head. McCain’s voting record is for the most part socially liberal. But he picks a real Conservative for a running mate. If the McCain ticket wins, Palin is likely to be Pubbie Pres. candidate in 4 or 8 years. Now think about that a second. What does that say about McCain’s core beliefs—or lack of same.

Traditionally, all of Pennsylvania is red, except for Philth-adelphia, Pittsburgh, and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (and maybe Erie; I’m not sure). These areas have such a large population density, that they overpower the rest of the state.

Erie is traditionally blue. Lots of working class people, a slightly high impoverished population, a large black population, three colleges (four if you count nearby Edinboro).

That said, there is also a large Catholic population; the press about the Church and the bishops lately could help. Bishop Trautman (not considered a 'conservative' in many Catholic circles) has been involved with some pro-life events, including one where he explicitly denounced the Freedom of Choice Act.

In addition, in my time driving around, there have been very few Obama signs/stickers. There aren't many more than I saw in the primaries (when the signs/stickers I saw were about evenly split between Hillary, 0, and Ron Paul (yes, seriously)). RNC hasn't had many signs or stickers available until recently. Even so, what I've seen is probably about 3:2 for 0.

0 should be winning the non-black part of Erie by leaps and bounds (he would be winning the black part no matter what). I'd say he's in trouble in Erie.

Good news! So there are 4 “blue” areas of PA; Erie, Scranton/WB, Philth-adelphia, and Pittsburgh. Hopefully, the first 2 will go McCain, and overrule the voting fraud in the last 2 areas.

Actually, McCain’s record on social issues is far enough to the right that all the lib social issue special interests hate him. so I think the pick says that he considers that stuff (and reform) to be more important than the things Palin disagrees with him on.
