Sea of red to greet Palin in Scranton
Times Leader (Wilkes-Barre PA) ^ | 10/14/08 | Bill O'Boyle

When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin walks into the Riverfront Sports Complex in Scranton today, she will see red.

And that’s a good thing if you are a supporter of the Republican ticket of Ariz. Sen. John McCain and Palin.

An e-mail sent from the McCain-Palin campaign urges those attending to wear red to the rally.

“We want to flood the venue with red to show our strength and determination to turn Pennsylvania red on Nov. 4,” the e-mail stated.

Red is the color used by political pundits to depict which states are Republican and blue is used to designate Democratic areas.

Carol Oleski, director of the Scranton office of Democrats for McCain, said the level of enthusiasm building up to Palin’s arrival is “unbelievable.”

“Absolutely, we will all be wearing red,” Oleski said. “We were told 10,000 tickets would be available for the event and they are going out fast. I expect a majority, if not all of them, will go.”

The Riverfront Sports Complex, depending on how it is configured, could hold up to 12,000 people.

Oleski said people from all areas have been calling for tickets. She said requests have come in from New York, New Jersey, Pottstown, Allentown and even California.

“Some people are actually flying in for this event,” Oleski said. “Most of the ticket requests have come from surrounding counties, but I expect a lot of people from out of the area to be here.”

Oleski said Palin’s visit has excited the volunteers in the office who she said have long awaited the Alaska governor’s arrival.

“We are all glad that Gov. Palin is giving this area the opportunity to see and hear her,” Oleski said. “We feel this area is extremely critical to the outcome of this election.”

Doors to the Palin rally open at 11 a.m. It is unknown exactly what time Palin will address the crowd.

Staunch Hillary Clinton supporter Lynette Long, a Bethesda, Md. psychologist, addressed a group at the Scranton office of Democrats for McCain on Monday.

Long, a vocal opponent of the Democratic caucus process that resulted in the nomination of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, has become an avid supporter of the McCain-Palin ticket.

Long believes the efforts produced invalid results in the caucus states and the nomination of Obama as the Democratic candidate for the presidency is “against the will of the people.”

Long has now endorsed the McCain-Palin ticket.

Red has always been the color of the left. It was all changed in November 2000 by a graphic artist for USA Today who decided to color Bush states in red.

I say we go back to the old way. Red = left.

You can also tell a lot by the fact that Obama, the Clintons and Biden are spending a lot of time in PA for a state that Obama is winning by 13 points according to RCP.

Because most of the media is in the tank for Obama, and will try to skew the election any way they can.

That’s because we don’t have to feel funny comparing ourselves with the color red. The Dems do not want to be painted with that color. We are secure in the knowledge that America will never confuse the Republican party with the party of communists.

I’m in Kanjorski’s district, and in the 24 years he has been in office, I have NEVER seen so much advertizing (mostly negative) and so many signs for the Kanjorski campaign as I have for this election. He’s worried, and probably knows that Lou will win handily. I hope Hackett does as well; he has the advantage of being in a mostly Republican district.

RED = red-blooded American
BLUE = blue-blooded elitist

Red has traditionally been used for the party out of power in Presidential elections. Since Bush was the candidate for the party out of power in 2000, it was the color used for him.

Phrases like “red State, blue State” that caught on due to the internet in 2000 and that is how it got stuck.

Sounds like NY. On a county map of 2004, my state is mostly red, but the blue parts are where most of the people live. NYC controls the rest of NY most of the time.

Yeah, McCain has been working hard in two states where he is down by double digits (13 in PA, 10 or 17 in WI depending on what polls you believe) and Obama is having to send the Clintons and Joe to shore up PA. Weird, huh?

Well here’s where it gets even weirder: PA hasn’t gone red in 20 years and in the last 40 years its only gone red when the Republican won an electoral landslide—’72,, ‘80, ‘84, 88. If both campaigns think it’s in play they are either both run by complete incompetents or the polls we’re seeing might as well be printed on toilet paper.

Red is also one of the colors of the American flag, and of the blood we’ve shed to be free.

Red is also the color of the "rockets' glare" ... and while they were being launched by the bad guys, their light revealed:

Listen up folks—I remember Gov. Palin saying a couple of weeks ago that she was not required to leave her brain at the door when she signed on to the McCain ticket. She is in the NO. 2 spot and no doubt she has been given some dos and don’ts. I have heard her say she doesn’t agree with McCain on everything and she even gave an example. I’m over 65 and sometimes I can’t get all synapses snapping the way I would like so I forget what the issue was. It may have been abortion.

I think it was a stupid question for Rush to ask, because the answer is obvious. It is McCain’s campaign. He is a RINO—except on national security. So, let’s all just be happy a true conservative is being given an opportunity to come to the fore. McCain picked a conservative as a running mate. I’m grateful for that and will vote the McCain/Palin ticket.

The issue Palin disagrees with McCain on is drilling in ANWR. (Maybe others, but that’s the only one I’ve heard.)

The Libs, Sierra, the other enviro nutters think she loves slaughtering wolves, moose, and rabbits form bombers in the air!! No kidding. BTW, crowds do not really tell much about who in the entire state will vote. But, but, it is a telling item to encourage the BASE and other voters who still might be swayed from the socialist pacifist to McCain.

Thanks MayflowerMadam. You are correct it was ANWR. People like you make Free Republic what it is.

I believe McCain is winning and will win the election. Last two Bush presidential runs I was fairly well bummed out by this time in the electon cycle. I thought he was losing or it was really close. Don’t feel that way this time around. Maybe I’m naive. I just don’t see the buzz out there for the Marxist Onada and I live in NJ—a very blue state. There is a dem family a block over that always has signs out for all dems that are up for election. It’s the same this year—except there is no Marxist Onada sign.

While visiting my son in Lehigh Valley,PA, a couple of weeks ago I saw a smattering of McCain/Palin signs but none for the Marxist Onada.

Other Freepers have been making the same observation in the so-called swing states—Ohio, PA, Mich, FL etc. Hopefully we are not blowing smoke up out butts.

He's hardcore on abortion and some other social issues too. For example, when he says "no gay marriage" he means it, but Obama's lying out his butt about it while his wife goes around speaking to gay groups and winking at them.

I don’t mean to bring you down (I think he’s winning, too) but keep in mind that signs for both men have been scarce in safe states. For example, my county GOP chair had to buy McCain signs, and the word is the county Dem committee had to do the same for their Obama signs. Both campaigns know that Illinois will go for Obama by double digits, so they aren’t sending much in here.
