Two years after Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Foleys career imploded in a sex scandal, his successor, Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney, faces allegations that he agreed to pay $121,000 to a former mistress who worked on his congressional and campaign staffs and was threatening to sue him.
The allegations were first reported here by ABC News.
Mahoney responded late this afternoon by calling for a House Ethics Committee investigation. Congress is in recess until after the Nov. 4 election.
I was notified this afternoon about a story that ran on ABC Newsâ website reporting allegations about a former employee. While these allegations are based on hearsay, I believe that my constituents need a full accounting. As such, I have requested the House Ethics Committee to review these allegations. I am confident that when the facts are presented that I will be vindicated.
The ABC report cites unnamed current and former members of Mahoneys staff who said Mahoney, who is married, paid $61,000 to Patricia Allen and $60,000 to her attorney and promised Allen a $50,000-a-year job with the Nashville firm that handles Mahoneys campaign advertising.
The firm, Fletcher Rowley Chao Riddle Inc., severed its relationship with Mahoney this afternoon.
According to ABC News, Tim Mahoney apparently included our company in a secret legal settlement without the knowledge of our firm. Our firm did not agree to any legal settlement, said the firms CEO, Bill Fletcher.
If these allegations are true Tim Mahoneys actions are unacceptable and not in line with FRCRs business ethics.
Mahoney narrowly won the seat in 2006 after Foley resigned in a scandal over sexually charged Internet messages he sent to teenage congressional pages.
Mahoney campaigned by decrying the mess in Congress and positioning himself as a straight-talking outsider who believes in faith, family and personal responsibility.

Must be something in the water down there...
Sounds like a non-denial denial to me...
Who is the republican running against him? We need to send him some money!! Can we get the seat back?
MAHONEY: "I'm the judge and jury. You're fired. Hear me?"The quarterback is toast!MAHONEY: "You work at my pleasure. You know what that means? It means you work at my pleasure. If you do the job that I think you should do, you get to keep your job."
MAHONEY: ".. and guess what? The only person that matters is guess who? Me. You understand that?"
The disgusting thing is that Democrat leaders have known about this for months and did NOTHING. They were hoping to keep this hush-hush until the schmuck was safely re-elected. Then stretch out an ethics complaint indefinitely while feigning all kinds of concern.
Now Emmanuel is out there for blaming the GOP for leaking the story and trying to turn the tables. It won’t work. When people hear how he bullied and berated that women in the phone, it will make them sick.
If Mahoney were black, he’d be able to keep his seat - no problem. The CBC would see to that. But he’s done and hopefully it’s too late to do a Torricelli and substitute someone else for him. He just lost his seat, IMO, and deservedly so. His district must be a swing district since Foley, a Republican previously held the seat, so people won’t have a problem pulling the GOP lever.
He will be reelected in a landslide.
I wonder how much derogatory info the the “news media” is sitting on regarding Democrats? How much are they covering up? Why are they releasing this now? Are they trying to deflect attention from something really bad about to come up about their favorite candidate Barack Hussein Obama?
yeah ... in Florida that would be bikinis.
Here's the guy running against Mahoney-he's a rookie, but he's right on the issues:
That was my first instinct too. But after reading the details and hearing the audio, I think he's a goner.
It's as disgusting as it is unsurprising. If only the MSM outrage merchants will serve up a fraction of the all-hands-on-deck saturation coverage given the Foley scandal ... oh, well, one can dream.
What is up with the folks down there? I wonder what kind of sex-pervert they will pick next?
What did they know and when did they start the cover up?.
Sorry for the intentional redundancy.
On what day were they elected?
Bill Fletcher can run his business as he pleases. I wouldn’t make it a habit to fire people based on ABC News reports. Of course, maybe the hiring details are dawning on him all of a sudden.
