Rep. Lewis clarifies controversial remarks about McCain, Palin (all McCain supporters are racist)

Georgia Rep. John Lewis said Saturday that controversial remarks he made comparing the feeling at recent Republican rallies to those of segregationist George Wallace were misinterpreted.

The civil rights icon issued a statement Saturday evening which said a "careful review" of his remarks made earlier in the day "would reveal that I did not compare Sen. John McCain or Gov. Sarah Palin to George Wallace."

McCain said Lewis' earlier statement was "a brazen and baseless attack" and called on Sen. Barack Obama to repudiate it.

Lewis had said earlier that he was "deeply disturbed by the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign" and that the Republican running mates are "playing with fire."

"What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history. Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse," Lewis said in a statement.

"What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history."

Right & Condy Rice was a member of the church you talked about earlier. She lost friends in the bombing. Anyone know if Lewis ever decried the partisan & racist crap thrown at her over the years?

Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse," Lewis said in a statement.

No "sowing" about it. We're not angry because of the color of Obama's skin. We're angry about the Donks putting up a sham candidate, with harmful policies that are gonna tear the fabric of our nation apart. Stop thinking we strongly disagree because of skin color. It's his red innards that are making us angry.

As I just posted on another thread...

But yet it’s ok for someone to spray paint “republicans are racist” on a McCains headquarter window?

Lewis would be yelling racism if there was a Congressional White Caucus but for him it's ok to be a member of the black members only, Congressional Black Caucus.
BTW, Obama is a member is the exclusive black members club.

You can’t have a war without at least two opponents. I see only one side spewing perjorative comments and baiting the race issue.

Exactly. I’m so tired of the race baiting while minorities get a pass. The slave trade ended well before anyone of us today was born so my feelings are get the hell over it. I don’t stop and think about whether I will help someone on the side of the road because of their race. I know most of us hear would gladly throw our support behind Michael Steele and other black Republicans. We are driven by our principles and our principles are what make it impossible to vote Barack Obama.

Obama is a BLACK racist. He went to the Jeremiah Wright black racist church for 20 years! Why isn’t Rep. Wright squealing about that? He is an idiot.

I wish you had to take an IQ test to be allowed to run for congress. There is no way Lewis would get a 70.

This is the same fool that says 10 million black slaves were thrown overboard on ships coming to American and that even today the sharks get excited whenever a black man goes in the water.

What is wrong with the people who elect idiots like Lewis. Have they no self respect or are they just as ignorant as he is?

Misinterpreted, poor judgment, misunderstood, misstep, mistake, .... All code words for Obama's intelligence.

I'm sure not letting those pukes get away with it. What we have here is a guy whose forebears were most likely Indian hating, squaw raping, Indian baby scalping Buffalo Soldiers and he's criticizing an Eskimo.

Although Lewis is pretty old and mostly senile he should be held as accountable for this sort of BS as he might have held Strom Thurmond.

A guy like Lewis, or one of his handlers, really can't be trusted.

That is it exactly. I get looks of visceral hatred when a black person pulls next to me after having viewed my well decorated bumper full of Sarah Palin stickers. Without Obama, these same folks would not have that reaction.

My main social network is a local dog park that used to have a community of people who are joined by our love of animals. Now we sit on opposite sides of the park and only exchange the most banal greetings.

I am not a racist. I have hired and promoted many people of many backgrounds. I think one of the worst moments I ever had as a manager was when I as a female took a black male employee to lunch in Springfield Va in the early 90's and saw how uncomfortable he became. I really didn't get it until I looked behind me and saw the looks we were getting from a group of young white males. I feel that way all over again...just from the opposite side. Obama is stirring the hate pot big time and he just gets away with it. You bet I am angry. And if he thinks for one moment that I will reward this crap with my vote just to "feel better", he can think again. Hell No!

Not only her, but her children. even an infant. Quite frankly, Lewis is a retard who can barely speak. He’e the dimwit who rants about the sharks swimming the ghost trails of slave ships because a gazillion africans were tossed. BTW is it true Palin is to appear on SNL? I heard that yesterday. I was shocked, considering that’s the source that said her husband was doin’ the daughters. How could she go near such vermin? What could she possibly gain?

I get it !! He isn’t comparing them to Wallace, just accusing them of sowing seeds of hatred and violence. That makes it so much better. Whew!
