A Weird Campaign Gets Weirder (Victor Davis Hanson on the MSM and the "Obama Rules")
NRO's The Corner ^ | 10/11/2008 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 10/12/2008 10:23:13 AM PDT by mojito

This campaign gets ever more surrealistic. For most of August and early September, Obama on the stump was complaining about the McCain campaign's "lying" and "lies"; yet last night on CNN Ed Rollins and David Gergen were lamenting the "new" McCain who had authorized an ad that said Obama had "lied" about his relations with Bill Ayers.

Then Fightin' Joe Biden was on the stump, veins bulging, hands pumping, screaming that "John McCain could not bring himself to look Barack Obama in the eye and say the same things to him. In my neighborhood, you got something to say to a guy, you look him in the eye and you say it to him." So here we are in fantasyland where Biden with hairplugs and teeth whitener evokes his supposed blue-collar fides to suggest the veteran who was tortured and held for over five years by the communists is now scared of facing down the arugula-eating Obama.

Then Rep. Lewis let loose with:

"What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history. Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse...George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama."

So suggesting that Obama showed terrible judgement in continuing to communicate with Ayers after his circa 9/11, very public boasts that he hadn't bombed enough is now the equivalent to the murdering of four innocent little girls.

The common denominator in all this? Ask Bill Clinton who saw all this earlier in the primaries. Team Obama has so prepped the battlefield that it is nearly impossible to raise legitimate questions about Sen. Obama's mysterious past without incurring charges of racism and / or character assassination. The modus operandi is to have Obama high in the clouds talking about hope and change and brotherhood, descending on occasion to lament those who cruelly lie about him, and then ascend again as he unleashes a variety of surrogates who preemptively create a climate in which McCain can say very little without being condemned s illibera and worse.

Many of us warned about all this in March and April as we saw the Obama Rules box in Hillary. Time is running out for McCain and Palin, and they must act preemptively themselves, honestly warning that they expect to be demonized and have the race card played against them, but that such threats and invective will hardly stop them from asking even more legitimate questions.

McCain must confront the MSM directly. He must tell his supporters that anyone who questions Obama's past will be declared a racist, or worse, by the MSM.

But he, McCain, will continue attacking Obama, no matter what the press says about him.

I don't know if McCain is prepared to assualt Obama and the media and face the storm.

I pray that he will find the strength of character to do this for the good of the country.

I’m afraid Biden is right. McCain WON’T say to Obama’s face what the ads say. He proved that in the debates.

Then Fightin' Joe Biden..."In my neighborhood, you got something to say to a guy, you look him in the eye and you say it to him."

And then you go on TV and deny you said it.

Kinda like you denied that you told a young voter that you and Obama are opposed to clean coal even though there is a YouTube video of you looking her in the eye and saying so. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ55UzAsp6M

But he, McCain, will continue attacking Obama, no matter what the press says about him.

All he has to say is "Senator Obama: when are you going to show your real birth certificate to the American voter?"

George Corley Wallace Jr. (August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998), was a Democratic Governor of Alabama... how does this correlate with anything Republicans are doing?

Those who support McCain / Palin because of McCain, are the Republicans who would vote for a stuffed panda, if it were running on the GOP ticket.

Palin was the start of true enthusiasm for Republicans, and is the one potential ace McCain has to play.

He needs to play the Palin card MORE. If necessary, make a point of hinting at a future Palin administration, for the public to consider. Palin is a *winner*.

McCain, really isn’t fighting very hard.

Ironically, he’s getting in his own way.

After the election, start watching the DemoRats start eating their own in order to solidify power. Obama is about to find out what Arkincide is all about.

Wallace believed in segregation. Obama just called McCain a racist in a round about way.

As always. If you are a person of color, use it any time you can. Guilt works. Guilt from what? The guilt they have been instilling for 40 years.

“Then Fightin’ Joe Biden...”In my neighborhood, you got something to say to a guy, you look him in the eye and you say it to him.””

Joe Biden is so full of it. He couldn’t beat his way out of a wet paper bag.

What Lewis said
“What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history. Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse...George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. is some of the most insidious destructive inciting rhetoric I have heard or read in a very long time that may have long lasting repercussions after the election dust has cleared.
Talk about hate!

First the Hillary campaign could not handle a black candidate and now the McCain camp seems to be unable to handle such a candidate. Earlier it would have been easy. McCain is an idiot.

That just about says it all. Even with his injuries, McCain could mop the floor with Home Depot Joe.*

*Afterwards, Joe could drown his sorrows over a cup of coffee and a piece of pie at Katie’s Diner.

"Team Obama has so prepped the battlefield that it is nearly impossible to raise legitimate questions about Sen. Obama's mysterious past without incurring charges of racism and / or character assassination."

The key is to STOP WORRING ABOUT IT! They will call you a racist no matter what you do. It's not a real charge...it's a tactic to silence you. See it for what it is.

Truth is...anyone who knowingly feels Obama is too radical for this country and votes for him anyway because he is black...really is a racist. Learn the difference.

Could the SCOTUS get involved with the birth certificate issue? If so, what would the steps be for them to have The Messiah to FINALLY reveal the contents of the COLB? It would have to happen fast. As of today, there are 23 days until election day.

Probably mush the same way that Obama announced his candidacy at the same place that Ole Abe Lincoln, republican did. Why dems like to compare dead republican presidents like Ronald Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt, and Abe Lincoln, but comapre us to dead democrats like George Wallace is beyond me. More rewriting of History to fool the sheeple

Not anymore. The race card has been worn out this election. People are sick of asking legitimate questions and being labeled a racist for it. Such a charge only works for so long. I’d laugh in a black person’s face if they called me a racist right about now. They’ve blown it completely on this election.
