To the degree that they are engaged in this election, conservatives are motivated entirely by fear of Obama and what he will do as president when backed by a solidly liberal Democratic House and Senate. They are not driven by love of the Republican candidate, and it shows in the anger present at McCain campaign rallies. Most conservatives will probably vote for McCain, but they also realize they are far less likely to persuade others, and they feel a disaster coming. The enthusiasm the Right felt during the 2004 election, which had been framed as a true ideological clash between Left and Right, simply does not exist this time around.
McCain's abrupt embrace of a big-government solution to the mortgage crisis during last week's debate places an exclamation point upon his many apostasies from conservative thought. Never a believer in supply-side economics, McCain had denounced the tax cuts of 2001. His push for campaign finance reform, for carbon emission restrictions, for federal regulation of boxing, and his long-standing defense of the Death Tax prior to this election have always made his agreements with conservatives on other issues appear to be accidental overlaps rather than a sign of common philosophical belief.
What would have happened if Republicans had nominated a conservative this time around? Conservatives must consider the possibility that things would look just as bad as they do now. The Bush presidency, by its mere association with conservative ideas, has ruined many of Republicans' best issues, creating an overwhelming headwind for any Republican running this year.
But a true conservative might also have shown voters an alternative rather than someone who incites "I agree with John" in the debates; someone to put Obama's left-wing policies in stark relief.

Nonsense. Freddoso's had his life threatened by Obama supporters because of his book, and anything I've ever read of his political opinions have been conservative.
Granted, it's not pleasant to read this, because it's true. It's not going to discourage conservatives from voting -- they know the alternative, and if you think about it, it's not going to discourage any moderate or Hillary supporter -- they're not particularly enamored of conservatives, in case you haven't noticed.
This idea of throwing away the election to make a point is further nonsense, considering who's running against him.
However, even if McCain manages to win, conservatives won't be dancing in the aisles for very long.
There is some wisdom in those words.

and develop a personal and family strategy to cope with the coming changes in America if McCain loses
figuring out how to shelter my kids from becoming cannon fodder in a future ill-devised socialist foreign policy venture purposely or unintentionally resulting from an Obama mindset, and returning to roots of economic self sufficiency (barter and frugality instead of creating wealth to be taxed away) are part of my thinking
Just remember Ronald Reagan was born because Washington turned it’s back on responsible conservatism...Jimmy Carter? Lyndon Johnson?? Richard Nixon was no conservative Republican yet appeared very right of Johnson....Reagan won even though cheating in elections go on every election (1960 Illinois, Chicago Machine electing Kennedy)...on a landslide scale. You simply can’t cheat your way into victory IF the nation gives you a super mandate...and a TRUE conservative will win each and every time with the right conservative message.
What is insulting is how this limp spined congress acts embarrassed by conservatism. They have been bullied into submission by a mainstream media who has quieted their ideology and therefore quieted the movement all together. It does us no good if conservatism is alive and well in main street if we have no leaders willing to take up our cause.

Another poster who exhibits wisdom and insightful lessons about Americans of today and what they have devolved into. I’d only add that after the war (the big one) people started moving out to the suburbs by the droves and told everyone else to not bother them with staying involved with Washington and local politics. They pretty soon developed a jaded view that their vote no longer mattered and they didn’t have time to vote anymore and they (and we) have finally arrived at that fatalistic and prophetic point in time. The Bible says that we shall reap what we sow.

While being no real booster of Rush I do enjoy listening to him talk about politics and his brand of conservatism and that is where I usually take issue with him much of the time but overall he does cause me to think for myself.
A real problem as I see it for Conservatives has been that we send so called quasi-Conservatives, aka moderate Republicans who sound and campaign as traditional Conservatives to Washington and expect them to deliver on their campaign promises to those who trusted and voted for them. We soon learn that they quickly get taken in by the allures that all powerful Washington elites are offering them and they all to quickly cross over to the dark-side. They succumb to the powers and riches they think they attain for playing ball. They soon find themselves doing things that they think will make them likable and acceptable to the true liberal elites there.
Rush used to say that much of the time a few years back, that too many moderate-leaning Republicans, aka RINO's are too busy trying to be liked by the liberal elites in Washington and in the media. That diseased thinking is what produced this RINO candidate that we have been saddled with today, IMHO. McCain used to be the darling of the media until the real thing came along and McCain soon found himself being the odd man out by those he sought to be friends with.
I'm not giving up. I will vote for McCain/Palin no matter what happens between now and election day, but I'm not real optimistic at this point.
If Obama wins I hope Romney gives it another crack in 2012 and chooses Bobby Jindal as his running mate if he wins the nomination. The GOP need conservatives who are smart, articulate and fully capable of engaging Obama/Biden on the battlefield of ideas and policy.
Palin has her heart in the right place, but I don't think she will be a credible candidate for POTUS in four years. Maybe in another 8 years she will be ready, but she has to develop much greater fluency in all the subjects that a potential President would be expected to have command of. That means she has to apply herself and learn a lot more about national security, economics, the Supreme Court and a wide range of important domestic issues, including everything from illegal immigration to education and healthcare.
McCain brings Palin on to soothe the unwashed masses, then he flips back to his "bi-partisan" spring loaded position. Republicans are hell bent to fight and McCain can't/won't fight for the very people who support him. He's a sham and a scam artist every bit as much as Obama is. So, vote for him if it makes you feel warm and cozy because he's not as bad as Obama. I won't be. I'll write in Deputy Dawg before I vote for this fraud.
