PHILADELPHIA (AFP) Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Saturday thanked his Republican rival John McCain for urging supporters to be respectful and stop hurling abuse at Obama at his rallies.
"Now, I want to acknowledge that Senator McCain tried to tone down the rhetoric yesterday in his town hall meeting and I appreciate his reminder that we can disagree while still being respectful of each other," Obama said.

Yep, McLame just keep apologizing for the base just saying what you are afraid to say.
McLame is toast now.
I felt like that too during the hanging chad nightmare but it wasn’t over and the Constitution did prevail.
Don’t give up or they win.
The fact is that we have to get McCain over the finish line, and then we can deal with opposing his agenda as best we can, and rebuilding the conservative movement.
None of that can happen is Obama wins and Dems have a veto-proof majority.
"Fight with me! Fight for Obama"...no thanks
Because he isn't. This is the only way to really understand the state of the race. Watch were they go!
Stupid move. Obama’s supporters have increased the hate.
"Kill him?" Really, that's what the base wanted to say "kill him"?
Thanks John, for being a spineless, limp-wristed, RINO imbecile. And please keep that bitch you hired off the air too.
McCain's not taking the bait.
Axelrod and the drive-bys wanted to maneuver into a position where the last 3 weeks would be devoted to beating up McCain for not condemning “hate speech”.
He did the right thing.
I agree, and I wasn't giving my own opinion, rather what appears to be what many of the sheeple have started saying along with the MSM starting to ratchet up the rhetoric about the "rage" at McCain rallies etc.
Remember that McCain did not just start lecturing the crowd at the beginning of the town hall meeting, rather responded to some questions (including one where a lady started calling Obama an Arab before he took the mike) from the audience. Now do I like every single word he chooses here, no. Did I also hear him in the same meeting say that we deserve to have the full truth from Obama on his associate with Ayers in response to another question, yes.
Having said that, he and the campaign most certainly need to continue discussion on these topics. And I think the ACORN stuff, due to Obama's history with them for both th economic situation and the current voter fraud stuff, may have even better legs even.
Finally, I think some of us are parsing words a little bit here. I have "respectfully" had some discussions with some people at work that made it quite clear that I thought they were totally on the wrong side of something, including some indication that they were not completely telling the truth.
I don't think McCain saying that Obama is a scary Marxist thug Arab terrorist (even if we think it is true) is likely an effective strategy. Now saying that he needs to answer to some of his associations and is "dangerous" to the country with his economic and foreign policy approach is fair game that has been treaded already by the campaign.
Here's another...
Biden: Obama not ready to be president.
“It doesnt matter. Its over, Im sorry to say.”
You’re in Ohio, right? Even a commentator on PBS said McCain would have to do REALLY well in Ohio to overcome the votes by the games the Democrats are playing.
And these two lines are what I’m hearing all the time - including on local talk radio:
“If those stories were true the government would never allow 0bama to run in the first place.”
And:
“0bama is the only one who has a real plan for fixing the economy.”
I’m trying, but it’s really hard to argue back to the first comment without sounding like a desperate loon this close to Election Day.
“I appreciate his reminder that we can disagree while still being respectful of each other,” Obama said ...
... and added that “we can continue to use surrogates to tear each other to pieces.”
It is not that McCain has handed over the election. He has fought hard, lobbed accusations (factual), and hit O hard on all his ties. Alas, it is of no avail. People have already made up their minds. No amount of 30 second ads from McCain will change their minds. So please stop accusing McCain of not fighting. He fought and lost (or is losing) badly.
McCain is McCain and thankfully Sarah Palin is Sarah Palin.
Don’t get angry about his way of doing things but do get out and vote for McCain-Palin on November 4th.
I want Democrat plants exposed and I want John McCain to make the case that he is tried and tested for times like these against a man with no such experience.
If McCain loses, Palin's national political career is over. She will remind too many Republicans of being on a ticket that was handed a historic, humiliating defeat (as seems likely), and will no longer be picked for any national candidacy.
