Ryanair on Friday claimed Sweden's Trade Ethical Council against Sexism in Advertising (ERK) was out of touch with the "Britney Spears generation" after the agency accused the discount airline of running a sexist ad campaign.
In defending the advertisement, Ryanair questioned whether the ERK accurately reflected the views of most Swedes.
We are sure that the anti-funsters at the ERK do not speak for the majority of the famously liberal and easy going Swedes, the company said in a statement.
The ad simply reflects the way a lot of young girls like to dress. We hope the old farts at the ERK loosen up a little.
The statement proclaimed further that Ryanair defends the right of Swedish girls to take their clothes off."
The ad in question features a scantily clad schoolgirl to promote a fare sale meant to coincide with the start of the school year.
According to ERK, the woman in the ad "is used to catch the eye in a sexual manner that is offensive to women in general".
But Ryanair spokesperson Stephen McNamara disagreed, claiming that the ads simply reflect reality.
This is the Britney Spears generation, he told The Local.
Young women around Europe want to look their best.
McNamara explained that Ryanair received no complaints from campaigns run in the UK and Ireland which used the same image.
He also didnt rule out the possibility that Ryanair would re-launch the campaign because it has generated so much interest.
Not even budget Irish airlines need to take Sweden’s Trade Ethical Council against Sexism in Advertising seriously.
To begin with, the latter organization hasn’t even bothered to construct a web page in English.
The Swedish AMC/Rambler Society probably exercises a greater deal of influence over Swedish business life (and life on Earth in general) than Sweden’s Trade Ethical Council against Sexism in Advertising:

We may need to see some visual evidence before we decide this issue.

If I go to Ireland, I know what airline I’m flying...

Another reason to love them! I flew them from Dublin to Paris for ten euro a few years back. No frills but man are they cheap.
This story would be easier to understand with pictures.

I am amazed that this is an issue in Western Europe’s almost anything goes on TV. I guess American PC is catching on in Europe — or is it the religious views of Muslims that are causing complaints?
Damn right! I went there when I was around 19 and most of them were staggering.
NOT Guilty!

Thats IT? Highschool cheerleaders won’t be caught dead with all that extra clothing...my mind had conjured up entirely different images(which I dare not post).
