After days of watching in silence, McCain calms the crowd at his Minnesota town meeting.

“I want everyone to be respectful. And let’s make sure we are, because that’s the way politics is done in America.”

Tells one supporter who says he’s scared of an Obama presidency: “I have to tell you, he is a decent person, a person that you do not have to be scared [of] as president of the United States.”

After a woman calls Obama “an Arab,” McCain interrupts to say: “No, ma’am. He is a decent family man, citizen

The media have trapped McCain. They send in stooges to yell (epithets?) against bho with cameras waiting to make it national. He has to put out these fires with grace or face the manufactured outrage.

You are no doubt correct. These Democrats are the dirtiest low-down SOB's known to man.

McCain has to act like a gentlemen and, in doing so, the ignorant among his own "supporters" INCLUDING MANY FOOLS POSTING ON THIS SITE, turn on McCain!

I am not either, but it looks like we’re in the minority. What’s he supposed to do, agree with the guy and get the crowd rabid and have it appear on the news, which it would, which would turn off independents and moderates? I think, like George HW Bush, he finds this whole attack and tit for tat stuff disgraceful. I was a Rudy supporter, now I’m a John and Sarah supporter, and I think we all need to calm down.

Is this on Fox right now? I hear it in the other room.

Any McCain staffers lurk here? Any? If so, listen to me now, “SARAH MUST BE AT THE NEXT DEBATE, RIGHT IN THE FRONT ROW!!!” This will throw Obama off his game and give a shot in the arm to McCain. He’s a totally different person when she is around.

McCain manages to do that because he just plain sucks.

"McCain is running the AYERS ad up here in MN."

So now McCain is on record saying what a swell guy Obama is. I'm waiting for the Obama TV rebuttal attack AD turning McCains own words against himself.

I don’t think McCain wants to win anymore.

I don't think he ever did. He simply wants to run for president, he doesn't want to BE president.

I’ve known that all along, that’s why I didn’t support him in the primary. The message I get from his remark is that he is giving up. Maybe he is toast and the race is over?

This isn’t a matter of “extreme rhetoric”....it is a case of McCain pretty much just endorsed Obama tonight.

What part of “it is over” don’t people understand.

I would crawl through glass to vote for the Palin ticket, but it isn’t going to do any good.

I am absolutely demoralized. I just lost all faith that we will win this election. I have no more faith in our side.

I just received a phone call from the Republican National Committee and basically told the caller the same thing.
We are witnessing the demise of our nation. May God have mercy on our children. We have squandered their inheritance in a generation of greed & corruption.

I was just hypothesizing based on an actual DU post I read.

The poster exhorted everyone to tell lies, spread false rumors and repeat slander as hard/much/often as they could.

The poster said to disregard whether any/all of the above are untrue, it ~will~ stick in people's minds and influence them, even if only subliminally.

All the other posters agreed whole heartedly and the end result was apparently all the "incest" rumors, "affairs", stories, etc, etc.

[although frankly, I was horrified to see someone admitting to employing this kind of “tact” without shame or even any attempt to hide it]

I guess some people will hear him call the Evil One a "decent family man" and contrast that with the horrendous slime thrown at Gov. Palin by TEO's character assassins.

Yep. Lecturing supporters on how to behave and saying how swell Obama is will surely be a winning strategy. McCain is absolutely pathetic.

Worth quoting!!

That is pure evil. Obama is nothing but an evil man in all respects. It breaks my heart to think about an innocent baby being murdered like that.

Exactly. There are ways to handle questions like that. A good candidate knows how to calm crowds without completely destroying the main reason people are voting for him.

McCain’s strongest argument has always been that he is the safe choice, the known quantity who can be trusted to lead the country, unlike that other guy with the weird name and dubious background. He has now utterly and completely undermined that argument. The swing voters who are doing a final gut-check on Obama just got told by McCain, of all people, that is safe to vote for Obama. In words that McCain can understand, “Whiskey tango foxtrot!”

How long before McDole starts refering to himself in the third person?

I applaud Senator McCain. There is a difference between letting someone hang themselves and letting your supports turn into a lynch mob.

Here’s what we need until Nov 4th.

Palin to fill in in debate 3 due to illness of McCain.

All McCain Palin ‘08 live events to be held by Palin Alone.

McCain to appear and wave to crowds, but no speaking role.

Revised campaign stickers with McCain in very reduced font
