The bailout bill was just an attempt to provide political cover to the politicians in Washington. Passing a rescue bill, before the crash, inoculated the politicians from any blame whatsoever.

The market looks out six months. The next six, or two quarters will be absolutely miserable, bail out, or no bailout.

Without the Fed, we will not recover for more than a decade, and with the fed, we may recover within a year.

Not much of a choice, but it's a rational one.
