Sarah Palin not to blame for Troopergate, say affidavits

Sarah Palin's husband Todd repeatedly told Alaska officials to fire his former brother-in-law from the police force but his wife, the state's governor, was unaware of what he was doing, according to affidavits.

The sworn statements were released as part of the "Troopergate" investigation into the dismissal of Walter Monegan, Alaska's public safety commissioner, allegedly for refusing to dismiss Mike Wooten, an Alaskan state trooper who had been involved in a messy divorce from Mrs Palin's sister.

A report on the case, which could damage the Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who chose Mrs Palin as his vice-presidential running mate, is due to be released on Friday.

Democrats supporting Mr McCain's rival Barack Obama have claimed the Palins pursued a vendetta and hope the report will reveal an improper involvement by the Alaska governor and her husband's in the affairs of the state police force.

Affidavits filed with investigators suggest that Mrs Palin was not involved but her husband, who she calls the "first dude" of Alaska, repeatedly met aides to discuss family issues.

"I have heard criticism that I am too involved in my wife's administration," Mr Palin wrote. "My wife and I are very close. We are each other's best friend. I have helped her in her career the best I can, and she has helped me."

But Mr Palin said he never pressurised anyone, including his wife, and said that after repeatedly talking about the matter with her, she finally told him to "drop" it. "Anyone who knows Sarah knows she is the governor and she calls the shots," he wrote.

Mrs Palin has said she dismissed Mr Monegan because of a budget dispute.

The documents appear to support that claim and detailed an attempt by Mr Monegan to shift control of the department away from Mrs Palin.

Once again its just “messy divorce”. No mention of the murder threat of the trooper against Palins father. No mention that the guy that was fired (for not firing the trooper) also threatened to kill his wife as well.

....sigh

In the meantime, a very dangerous trooper is still on duty in Alaska. At least, that’s my assumption. Does anyone know differently?

This will not produce much damage, but it will thrill the Obamamaniacs a little. I believe most voters will think Todd Palin was doing what any normal husband would do if a crazed ex-brother-in-law was threatening his loved ones. And Gov. Palin asked him to “drop it.” Add to that the fact that Monegan was insubordinate, and that he was serving at the governor’s pleasure.

“Tasergate” not “Troopergate”

Was the trooper married to Todd's or Sarah's sister?

The minute I had a deputy appear in a squad car drunk....driving it...I’d fire him that day. He would lose public confidence in his ability to carry out the law. If I didn’t see him drive the car drunk...then I’d ask for witnesses and have the whole thing recorded for public record, just to protect the town from a legal situation.

Most cops throughout America really don’t get it. If you lose public confidence in their ability....then you aren’t the law. I don’t care what badge you carry or what school you graduated from...its a matter of trust. Either you have it or you don’t.

“Was the trooper married to Todd’s or Sarah’s sister?”

He was married to Sarah Palin’s sister. Two guys married to sisters, I call brothers-in-law.

Palin lives in Wasilla. Wooten is stationed nearby. Palin became the first governor to drop her security detail. It looks like she knows differently.

Were there any other complaints about this trooper? I haven’t read too much about it, but it seems to me that someone like this probably has a history of abusing his power.
