Since the McCain campaign has resurfaced the matter of Barack Obama's relationship with Bill Ayers--the former terrorist now Chicago education professor---there are some matters I am curious about. I say this as one who has explained time and again in print and on television Ayers, by the time Obama met him in the 1990s, was a respected academic who was welcome into Chicago's civic life.
On Monday, Obama chief strategist David Axelrod said Obama was not aware of Ayers' terrorist background when he attended a political coffee at Ayers Hyde Park home at the beginning of his state senate race sometime in the fall of 1995. Ayers and Obama first crossed paths in 1995 while involved in the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, a foundation dealing with urban education issues.
So the question is--I'm just curious and I wonder about this as one who has defended Obama's association with Ayers, the education expert (not Ayers, the terrorist)---when did Obama finally learn about the Weather Underground background of Ayers and his wife Bernardine Dohrn?
As a young reporter working in Chicago, I was well aware of the Weather Underground couple on the lam from the law; Ayers father ran the local electrical utility company and was a big shot in the city. But this was years before Obama came to Chicago. As a rookie at the Sun-Times I tried to find Ayers and Dohrn working some connections, but nothing ever panned out and eventually they surrendered in Chicago in 1981.
I asked Obama chief strategist David Axelrod on Tuesday afternoon here when and how Obama learned about Ayers and Dohrn and their days with the violent radical 1960s group.

Bernadine Dohrn made numerous contacts with Fidel Castro’s Cuban Mission at the UN in 1968 and 1969, during which time she arranged for SDS groups to visit Havana.
After returning from Cuba, Dohrn and others met with North Vietnamese and Viet Cong representatives in Budapest, Hungary, to discuss antiwar strategy on US campuses. Speaking a few days later at an assembly of revolutionary student movements at Columbia University, Dohrn reported that the Vietnamese communists she met in Budapest were working with US GIs in Saigon, attempting to obtain military information.
As a gesture of solidarity, the Vietnamese who Dohrn met in Budapest presented her with a ring made from an American aircraft shot down over North Vietnam. Bill Ayers would receive a similar ring while meeting with Vietnamese communists in Toronto. He later recalled being so moved by the gesture that he “left the room to cry.” He said, “I realized...America was an evil... and that I was... living inside the belly of the beast....”
In January 1969, at the request of the Cubans and the Vietnamese, Dohrn assembled another SDS delegation to travel to Havana to plan what the Chicago Sun-Times called an “antiwar campaign during an eight-day seminar with representatives of Hanoi and the Viet Cong.”
Dohrn became a key planner in the founding of the Venceremos Brigades. Ostensibly a “solidarity” program for US leftists to visit and support Castro’s Cuba, the group was actually organized by Cuban intelligence as a covert attack on US security.
Cuban secret police offered the “brigadistas” money, advice and logistical support. Some Americans were also given guerrilla warfare training and instructed in the use of weapons and explosives.
While they were in Cuba, Huynh Van Ba, a representative of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam (Viet Cong) advised his American allies to “look for the person who fights hardest against the cops.” Dohrn stayed in telephone contact with Ba after returning home.
MIchele knew these terrorists before Barry thru working with Dorn at a laq firm.

I would ask Obama and Axelrod: if Obama must lie about himself—to such an extent that he is presented as opposite his real self—in order to win, doesn’t it mean the real Obama is vastly inferior?
And doesn’t the need to fabricate reveal intellectual deficiency on the part of David Axelrod?
Since Obama was in NY when the Brinks murders happened.
It was in the news, ALL THE TIME, and it was clear that the robbery and murders were the work of Weather Underground, founded by Ayers.
Ah yes but Obama didn’t know Ayers background. Just like he didn’t know about Wright’s radical views for 20 years. Amazing.
But this is all futile. The voters don't care and they wouldn't have cared even if the economy hadn't tanked. The haloed one's meme about change, the abysmal performance the last year of Pres Bush, the MSM and much more conspired to make a Republican unelectable. Oh and the chance to be part of history by electing a black who wasn't Jessie Jackson.

Only recently Ayers supported Ward Churchill of Colorado University after Churchill was excoriated for saying the victims in the WTC were nothing more than little Eichmann’s.

No, this statement is wrong. The problem is not enough voters know about Obama’s radical background because they watch local news or some other unreliable source.
This is far from reaching critical mass, and when it does Obama is finished.

To imply that bambi never knew this guy was a terrorist is completely absurd. I am a little younger than these 60’s recycled radical hippies, but to them, their idiotic exploits during the Vietnam War is the stuff of legend. They reminisce about their hippie days the way my father used to carry on about his WWII days. Based on the column about Ayers that showed up on 9-11-01, ironically enough, Ayers was still carrying on about his Weather Underground days. This was the one time in his life where he really “mattered.” He had every cop in America looking for him. He was important. He had people to kill. To think that no one knew about this guy’s past, especially bambi, is disingenous.
