Debating McCain Reference to "That One"
ABC News ^

Posted on 10/07/2008 8:55:24 PM PDT by WilliamReading

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Arnab Datta Report: Part way through Tuesday's debate, Obama press secretary Bill Burton emailed reporters asking: "Did John McCain just refer to Obama as 'that one'?"

"Folks are going to remember that," Burton told ABC News in a separate email.

Showing the power of a well-timed email, McCain's reference to Obama as "that one" became a topic of discussion in the spin room following the debate.

Obama strategist David Axelrod called it "odd."

"Senator Obama has a name," said Axelrod. "You'd expect your opponent to use that name."

Asked about the Obama campaign's effort to draw attention to the reference, McCain adviser Steve Schmidt sought to brush it off.

"I think it is diversionary on their part," said Schmidt, referring to the Obama campaign.

McCain's "that one" reference came when the Arizona senator was contrasting his opposition to the 2005 Bush energy bill which was, in McCain's words, "loaded down with goodies, billions for the oil companies," with Obama's support for the measure.

"You know who voted for it? You might never know. That one," said McCain, gesticulating towards Obama. "You know who voted against it? Me."

It was an appropriate assertion. I liked it.

Why did McCain refer to Obama as “that one”? And was it racist to talk like that?

Sarah Palin winked four times in the VP debate too!

Equally as irrelevant.

I also noticed that Brokaw said John McCain but when talking about Obama said Senator Obama several times. Why not Senator for both?

"Senator Obama has a name," said Axelrod. "You'd expect your opponent to use that name."

Yeah, but then you would get mad if he said his name "Barack Hussein Obama".

Shades of Ross Perot's "You people" comment?

I would have called him something else. I guess “that one” works.

McCain was clearly referring to which “one” of the two on the stage had voted for that bill.

Man, they are really reaching for something to hit McCain on. I guess the Keating 5 idea didn’t work so well. Duh.

I thought it was a funny, kinda Reaganish colloquialism. Something like “Well, there that one goes again. You can always rely on that one to be “green” behind the ears.”

I don’t recall Obama cloyingly referring to McCain as “John”.

Maybe he did, but I didn’t notice it like last time.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but at some point during the debate did Obama not refer to McCain as “the guy”? That is a racist remark!

It makes as much sense to me to call it that as it does to call McCain’s comment racist. McCain must have done better than I thought if this is what the media is seizing upon.

look, conservatives in the republican party have for a long time complained about McCain and his attitude toward others. Let’s not all act like we suddenly don’t know who we’re dealing with here. If it was calculated it was dumb, if it wasn’t it was dumb. either way, what is everyone talking about? It was dumb, and completely in character.
