You Guys Are Nuts [Andy McCarthy]
We have a disaster here which is what you should expect when you delegate a non-conservative to make the conservative (nay, the American) case. We can parse it eight ways to Sunday, but I think the commentary is missing the big picture.
Here's what Obama needed to do tonight: Convince the country that he was an utterly safe, conventional, centrist politician who may have leftward leanings but will do the right thing when the crunch comes.
Now, as the night went along, did you get the impression that Obama comes from the radical Left? Did you sense that he funded Leftist causes to the tune of tens of millions of dollars? Would you have guessed that he's pals with a guy who brags about bombing the Pentagon? Would you have guessed that he helped underwrite raging anti-Semites? Would you come away thinking, "Gee, he's proposing to transfer nearly a trillion dollars of wealth to third-world dictators through the UN"?
Nope. McCain didn't want to go there. So Obama comes off as just your average Center-Left politician. Gonna raise your taxes a little, gonna negotiate reasonably with America's enemies; gonna rely on our very talented federal courts to fight terrorists and solve most of America's problems; gonna legalize millions of hard-working illegal immigrants.
McCain? He comes off as Center-Right .. or maybe Center-Left ... but, either way, deeply respectful of Obama despite their policy quibbles.
Great. Memo to McCain Campaign: Someone is either a terrorist sympathizer or he isn't; someone is either disqualified as a terrorist sympathizer or he's qualified for public office. You helped portray Obama as a clealy qualified presidential candidate who would fight terrorists.
If that's what the public thinks, good luck trying to win this thing.
With due respect, I think tonight was a disaster for our side. I'm dumbfounded that no one else seems to think so. Obama did everything he needed to do, McCain did nothing he needed to do. What am I missing
I ask you again, how long have you really been posting at FR?
Any other freeper could answer the question.
This is not a “National Review” response but a blog entry - the entire post is misleading. That said, I agree with you - McCain is less of a man than Sarah Palin and just can’t seem to bring himself to “tell it like it is.” That could cost us the election.
Why are you a CANADIAN posting this crap and stirring up dissension and attacking the Republican nominee for President???????
You’re not a classic liberal you’re a LIBERAL.
I just don’t have much hope that will happen.
Bart.
I'm honest enough to know what needed to be done tonight and to know that McCain didn't do it.
We all better pray that there are some 527's out there prepared to run the right ads from now until November 4th, or it's going to be four years of an Obama, socialist, dystopian nightmare.
He'll move for the Fairness Doctrine first thing...and then it will get interesting.
I’m not voting for McCain either. I was never going to vote for McCain. You know, if you want a whole lot of great reasons not to vote for McCain, the Free Republic archives are a treasure trove.
The Republican Party doesn’t own my vote and they have to earn it like everyone else. Nominating John McCain was one of the ways for them to fail to get my vote this year.
I'll not pretend otherwise, McCain was not my favorite and you'll find posts from back in the primary season indicating my true feelings for the man. That was then and this is now. He's all we got, but the least he could do is represent himself well.
You are becoming the annoying one here, rather than face the reality of what's happening, you decide to scapegoat the people here calling it like it is.
Face up to what just happened here tonight. Whether intentional or not, McCain failed to do his part. He has the material to put Obama away and we're below 29 days to show time. What's he waiting on?
I've been a conservative since I was 12 years old and voted a straight Republican ticket every election since 1980 with one exception. I live in CT and for that single time last election, I voted for Lieberman who ran as an independent and I did it ONLY because he supported the military and Iraq.
Do not pretend to lecture me on conservative values or about this pretend election I'm watching. I don't know who you think you are but it's rather unbecoming watching you pretend you know how to spot the trolls. Get over yourself.
Screw yourself stupid dumb ass! the election is between a moderate Republican and Lucifer! Does it take more than one brain cell to figure this one out?!
And #168 goes for you too!
BO has a lot more to fear from the truth than our side does - we can’t hold back.
Our choice of candidates this year wasn’t great ( I was for Fred) and thank God Mac chose someone who outshines all candidates from either side. She’s doing a great job of getting the facts out.
I’m doing more than that-me, and my 10 siblings, and their mostly adult children, and all my HUGE family, all over the South and some in the Pacific Northwest and some in the Atlantic Corridor, are making sure to contact our HUGE cirlce of friends, family, and acquaintances, and fellow church members, and make sure they’re aware of Obama’s history, stances on issues, and voting record, especially his votes to allow baby murder and his radical ties. Yes, we care about the economy, but we grew up poor, it doesn’t scare us-a morally degenerate country does, there’s no coming back from that slide.
I didn’t know that. NRO is normally okay.
A vote for anyone but McCain is a vote for Obama.
It really is that simple.
I'm not voting for McCain, I'm voting for Palin.
Cheers!
If your purpose here is to bash McCain and insult other posters I suggest you leave, we don’t want you doom and gloomers here, we are voting against Obama and for Palin.
You haven’t posted much until tonight and your only purpose is to cause dissension, we all know McCain’s flaws, your are far worse.
Now is not the time to press the panic button. If you take out the secret sauce in recent polls, +5% - +10% Dem weightings, the race is tied nationally and in Battleground states.
This election will come down to turnout and it’s obvious the MSM is doing their best to depress the Repub base. I gotta admit, though, that McCain ain’t helping.
The nation surviving is more important than anyone’s principles.
How &*^%%^$%^$^%976459ing selfish of you to vote for Obama by default.
I agree with '...the election is between a moderate Republican and Lucifer!'
Don't you head in the sand people get it? That's EXACTLY why I'm getting so passionate about this!! We absolutely MUST win this election, but I'm beside myself watching our candidate throwing away chances handed to him on a silver platter.
Look, I am not trying to diminish our chance of winning at all, but McCain has simply got to try, we can't do it for him and wishful thinking does absolutely nothing.
“A vote for anyone but McCain is a vote for Obama.”
Horse hockey.
A vote for Obama is a vote for Obama. If you don’t vote for Obama, you don’t vote for Obama. There’s not enough Catholic guilt on the planet to make me apologize for voting for the candidate I feel is best.
It’s not McCain, but it’s also not Obama.
Andy McCarthy? As in Andrew McCarthy? If so, he hasn’t been a conservative in a coon’s age.
