As he was opening up a lead over his rival in the polls, Barack Obama was outspending John McCain on television advertising three-to-one, according to the Washington Post's Chris Cillizza.
"From Sept. 30 to Oct. 6, Obama spent more than $20 million on television ads in 17 states including more than $3 million in Pennsylvania and more than $2 million each in Florida, Michigan and Ohio," he writes. "McCain in that same time frame spent just $7.2 million in 15 states. Even when the Republican National Committee's independent expenditure spending in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin is factored in (a total of $5.3 million), Obama still outspent the combined GOP forces by roughly $8 million in the last week alone."
Obama chose to forgo public financing in the general election, opting instead to rely on his unprecedented fundraising machine, which in August brought in more than $67 million. His rival opted for public financing, which meant that he received $84 million to spend from his official nomination at the beginning of September to Election Day. McCain cannot raise additional funds, though the RNC can raise money and advertise on McCain's behalf.
As Cillizza notes, in some of the states where Obama has seen a recent surge in the polls most notably, Florida and North Carolina he has massively outspent his Republican rival. In Florida alone, Obama recently outspent McCain on television ads by $2.2 million.
You are so right! The amount of money being spent in these states by Obama speaks volumes. Obama’s burn rate has to be extremely high. Since he didn’t take federal funding and the DNC is way behind in donations, he is going to be going way in debt for the ads or cutting back. I think they are still running so many ads not to admit some states are out of reach.
Liddy Dole in NC was up +1 in a poll today so my guess is that NC will soon be out of reach for Obama. No way Obama wins Indiana with the new voting that requires a picture ID — no more Chicago thugs coming into Gary IN to vote.
Gallup, Rasmussen are well outside of the margin of error, and they’re saying Obama leads in most states.
I was reading an article about that requirement today, while I looked at Bush's margin in IN in 2004 (60-39%), and then I smiled at Obama supposedly leading in Indiana. One can certainly argue that there is some concern, since McCain or the RNC is spending money there. But I really don't see a problem with the Hoosier state.
Rasmussen has a +6 Dem bias built in. So throw that one out. Yes, Gallup has an Obama lead. Zogby, Battleground and one or two more have significantly smaller Obamessiah leads. Does that upset you?
:-D
Obama has spent close to $10 million in Florida. We alligators down here will bleed him dry. LOL!
Obama has problems in Florida. He will get fewer Jewish votes than Kerry. A lot of Cuban-Americans know he is a commie. They will also be on their guard for any vote theft in Dade County.
We have a Repub sheriff in Broward so vote theft will be harder. Side Dinnerstein who is the head of the GOP in Palm Beach County is doing a good job with Jewish voters.
White Democrats and Hillary Democrats will have issues with the guy. Less racism and more over control of the Dem Party. Obama hijacked it from the Clintons and they want the party back. McCain winning should help.
West coast from Naples to Sarasota should be Repub ditto North Palm to Melbourne. Panhandle is Repub.
I-4 Corridor is a swing region. Daytona through Orlando to Tampa. Last I saw - McCain should be fine here.
Take nothing for granted. No whining.
Donate and volunteer.
McCain is holding fire until the last two weeks. If you can afford it - donate to McCain or RNC/GOP web site.
Obama is spneidng money like crazy. His fund rasing may be weaker due to illegal Internet credit card donations from the Middle East and the GOP/RNC is making an issue of it.
Obama has dumped $10 million or more in Florida. I hope he dumps $20 million here because he will lose FL.
1. Donate online at McCain site or GOP/RNC
2. Volunteer at local McCain HQ. This is how we make sure we win.
Every Repub and Dem I speak to wants nothing to do with Obama. I know one Obama Dem supporter.
The bad economic situation is Soros and his hedge fund buddies trying to wipe out the global financial system.

3. Volunteer - no football games on Sat or Sun. Go to local McCain HQ and volunteer. It is FUN. Great people and You are brining the fight to McCain.
i was in Reno the last three days... i must have seen 10 Obama commercials and 3 McCain... and one of McCain’s was at an insane hour... like 2:00 in the morning or something... Obama’s were during the middle of the day...
You don’t live in IN, do you? I have seen it flip. People have suddenly become infatuated with the Zero. It’s unbelievable. If McCain wins Indiana by more than 3%, I will be shocked. GET OUT AND VOTE MCCAIN and DANIELS, INDIANA!
Doesn't change the fact that Bush carried Indiana four years ago by a 60-39% margin. OH, WI, MI and PA were all close four years ago. Now OH, WI, MI and PA are all close again, meaning 2008 looks a lot like 2004. Yet in Indiana the lightweight Marxist knocked 20 points off the GOP baseline? Without seeing similar movement in the surrounding states? Possible, I guess, but certainly not very likely.
But we're in agreement. Everyone needs to stop worrying and get working, not only for McCain/Palin but for conservative candidates and initiatives all across the country.
don’t = don’t live
THey will get right on that, right after they prosecute Clinton and Gore for illegal Chinese money to buy the election.
