Driver Accused Of Stopping School Bus On Tracks With Train Coming

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Volusia County school bus driver is in trouble Tuesday for threatening to leave kids on some train tracks with a train coming. The students from Campbell Middle School said the bus driver was upset because they would not stop talking.

The school bus was headed eastbound on George Ingram Boulevard (see map) on Monday, two blocks from US-1. According to the students, the driver stopped on the tracks, opened the door and told them she wasn't moving until they quieted down.

The kids had just left Campbell Middle School and were on their way home. All of a sudden the crossing arms started coming down and a train was headed in their direction.

The kids panicked and, by this time, cars were stopped behind the school bus. Students started yelling at drivers to back up. The bus driver was able to put it in reverse and move out of harm's way.

The incident has forced the school district to remove the driver from the wheel. She was placed on office duty until officials review the bus surveillance video and complete the investigation.

"The professional standards office is involved. They'll determine if any disciplinary action needs to be taken. They'll determine what that action is. Once they notify the employee, it takes ten days before it becomes public," explained Nancy Wait, Volusia County Schools.

The school district isn't releasing the driver's name. Officials said she's been a bus driver with Volusia County schools for 11 years and has never had any disciplinary issues.

When I was in junior high there was a group of boys who were acting up. Because of them everyone at the stop was forced to get out in knee deep water (it was storming at the time)instead of going a little further so we weren’t let off in a puddle. The driver didnt care that only a few kids were at fault.

That translates into “how in the hell can we cover this up and protect our overpaid asses?”

When my kids grew up they told me about a bus driver they had who was stoned all the time. But not to worry - busing is for the greater liberal good...

The ONLY question is did she stop the bus on the tracks. I don’t care if the kids were rioting, there are actions that should be taken but stopping a school bus on train tracks would NEVER be one of them. If she did stop on the tracks she should be crininally charged with Reckless Endengerment

Yep, as a start.

When I was a kid the bus driver stopped the bus and threatened to beat the crap out of us.

As I recall he never got in trouble for it and we all behaved better after that.

While not suggesting actually putting lives in jeapordy is a good idea, the idea of threatening the kids with great bodily harm, and inflicting some of it when needed, is a good idea.

There is no excuse. In the sixties, I had to ride a school bus for 15 miles each way in order to get to school 15 miles away. It was not pleasant. As a child, I was appalled when they made busing the rule of the land to facilitate integration. No one should have to ride a school bus unless they are far from the school as I was. I had many scary situations, both bus driver actions and abuse from others on the bus.

The bus driver should be immediately fired. No question about it.

Oh Yeah! I’m sure a train coming at them made them REAL quiet. I can almost hear their horrified screams now! Poor kids. I’m so happy my kids are at home where they are safe.

My daughter’s friend from the public high school just brought the Koran home because they are studying it for social studies. When she asked if they will also be studying the bible the teacher said due to the separation of church and state they can’t do that.

You are SO corect. Funny that zero tolerance crap only applies to “the children” The bus driver should be fired, and the state should suspend/revoke the drivers license.

The fact that nearly all school districts in the country expect the bus driver to both supervise a bus full of spoiled-rotten unruly jerk-wad kids and drive the bus safely at the same time is almost as criminal as this bus driver’s actions.

Maybe the driver was confused by the sticker on the back of the bus - ‘This bus stops at railroad crossings’ - and thought it sad ‘This bus stops ON railroad crossings.’

Ordinarily I might be tempted to agree with you, but no where in the article, did the writer hint of nationality, race or anything else that would help in that conclusion.
I've been a truck driver for fourty years and have come across many dumb situations in my life. I've been in the same situation as that bus driver, I'll come to a RxR crossing and have room on the other side of the track's but before I could get my truck all the way across the tracks a “Four wheeler”, or car to you, would come from the left lane into the right lane in front of me. Were they illegals ?, I don't know, but I wouldn't assume they were.
