Democratic surrogates say they've been given the go-ahead from the Obama campaign to mention John McCain's associations with S&L kingpin Charles Keating and other historically tarnished creatures when asked about Obama's connection to ex-Weatherman William Ayers.

A senior Democrat who has had contact with Obama's high command points to Democratic strategist Paul Begala's comments on this morning's Meet the Press.

Begala noted that McCain once "sat on the board of a very right wing organization," the U.S. Council for World Freedom, led by a retired Army Maj. General named John Singlaub. The Anti-Defamation League allegedly called the CWF's parent organization a gathering place for racists and anti-Semites.

I sure hope this is what sets a fire under McCain. This makes it personal--he won't be just losing the election, his reputation will be permanently tarnished, so maybe that is what will get him on the offensive.

I see on another thread that McCain has finally mentioned Ayers. I hope it's not too little, too late, but from the looks of things at realclearpolitics and every poll I've seen, it's over.

Robert Bennett, Chief Counsel to the Democrats during the investigation, said that McCain should not be included in the investigation and that their was not evidence of any wrongdoing by Senator McCain.

In February this year, on Fox News’ “Hannity and Colmes,” Bennett said

“First, I should tell your listeners I’m a registered Democrat, so I’m not on (McCain’s) side of a lot of issues. But I investigated John McCain for a year and a half, at least, when I was special counsel to the Senate Ethics Committee in the Keating Five. ... And if there is one thing I am absolutely confident of, it is John McCain is an honest man. I recommended to the Senate Ethics Committee that he be cut out of the case, that there was no evidence against him.”

I'd suggest that McCain spread the word that the Annenberg deal failed to improve education (see comments at Little Green Footballs), which shows Obama FAILED when he had some meager leadership position, but at this point I'm just grateful McCain is still campaigning.

Obama is just so awful. Is it possible of the last three dem nominees John Kerry is actually the...least-worst?

Watch out for your car if you have a Sarah Palin sticker on it, and the polls start to show the race tightening, and then a reversal in favor of McCain. (Liberal) people will freak out and will do damage to cars over this. Or worse. They are one step away from renouncing their US citizenship and heading for Belgium, or freaking out in need of meds.
