Despite the lies told by the press and by John Kerry, special forces did in fact try to kill Bin Laden at Tora Bora. The biggest challenge in the operation was in fact the terrain. Afghan fighters who were to actually lead the charge ended up turning on the US forces during a cease fire they had with al Qaeda. Then there is the big issue as told by the officer,

We know John Kerry is a liar. Can I see a show of hands of those (on this thread) who believe what he says.

Thought so, I don't see any.

Personally, I believe they succeeded. I believe bin Laden is dead and has been for years. All the phony audiotapes and hooha is just a raghead smoke screen. Why wouldn't he show his face otherwise?

Nope, he's cave putty, and by now, even the scorpions who digested his rotting remains have sickened and died.

I saw this on 60 minutes tonight. Tora Bora must have seemed like stepping on the moon for the first time except it was 2 times earth gravity, all uphill and even supposed friends were our enemies. God Bless Delta Force and all our Brave Fighting Forces.

The whole mission (first over the mountains and then laying in the minefields) being dissapproved smacks of Rumsfeld.

JUST DAMN!

Um, I don't know, to remain living, possibly? As he has seen the other 4/5 of AQ original leadership either captured or killed.

No. It smacks of reality. Understand amateurs talk tactics....professionals talk logistics. The logistics weren't there with regard to much of what was being asked for.......

Also understand, SecDef Rumsfeld did more for SOCCOM (making it its own branch, where Conventional is often tasked supporting it....not the other way around), SecDef Rumsfeld did more for SOCCOM and our shooters than any person in the last 50 years......In terms of letting them fight, kicking doors and pulling triggers.....and running their own Intel Ops to boot (without having to constantly wait on other risk-adverse OGAs).

The last video tape 2 or 3 years ago was a "dead" giveaway. He looked about 9 or 10 years younger in it. There were even jokes going around about him coloring his beard back to black.

*** And my comments were in regard to the logistics for the claims of extra U.S soldiers on the ground - Not with regard to the two OP plans original drawn up by Delta Operators....

Uh, think about this for a sec:

If we came in through Pak, and word got out around that time, Pakistan’s ISI would likely have taken down their government. The ISI was pretty clearly riddled with people sympathetic to OBL and AQ.

Bush had imposed (quite heavily) on Musharraf to be with the US or against us. Musharraf chose the US, but at great personal risk to his own hide. There were limits on what we could demand of the Pakistani government at that time - and likely, if we had used their ground and had asked for co-operation from their armed forced (eg, to pull forces away into another area so they wouldn’t blow our team’s stealth), and we had gotten bin Laden — the crap would have hit the fan - hard.

And let’s think about this a sec: we’d really like those nukes the Paks have to remain under some semblance of control, yea? That’s something you have to keep in mind when trying to lean on the Paks now: They’re a player in the nuke club.

You're the first person I have seen on FR to speak accurately about this subject in ages. Very refreshing...
