Just over a month into the fall semester, students at American River College, the state's largest community college, got a welcome lesson in the importance of elections.

Though the college has more than 37,000 students, only 300 students voted in the last Student Council election.

Now the larger student body has found reason to pay attention. The Student Council has drawn statewide attention with its 8-3 vote on Tuesday to endorse Proposition 8. That's the constitutional amendment initiative on the Nov. 4 statewide ballot titled "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry."

Students who oppose the ballot initiative have collected signatures for a recall election for the eight council members, including five students from the former Soviet Union. Those immigrant students, coming from a country where elections were pro forma affairs, took the election process seriously. And they got into office.

In last Tuesday's debate, they exercised their First Amendment right to support traditional roles of men and women. . . .

Hmmm....300 out of 37,000. And college students are the lemmings that Obama is pinning his hopes on.

“[Council members] must also acknowledge the rights of others – including their opponents – to express their opinions. There was no such acknowledgment when one member of the council condemned gay and lesbian students who “influence us here right on campus – they do propaganda for homosexuality in front of the cafeteria.”

“Students who support same-sex marriage need to acknowledge the rights of their opponents, too. Some 200 students cursed and shouted down a council member [they opposed].”

So, one side says something the other side doesn’t like, and as a result the other side gets to silence what they don’t want to hear. What a bizarre sense of balance the SacBee has. I sorta remember an apprentice thug from 5th grade...he used similar reasoning. “It’s not fair that you have lunch money and I don’t, so to make things fair, I’ll beat you up and take your money.” I have to wonder if that guy now works for the Obama campaign...

Good for the Council!

Interesting, isn't it, how much common sense we're seeing from people who've actually lived under "oppressive regimes."

Incidentally, the title of the ballot measure ("Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry") is a textbook example of begging the question, hard-left style. Specifically, it contains an unproven assertion -- in this case, that "same-sex couples" have a right to marry in the first place. Pfui.

Typical leftist compassionate chicanery.

I believe that the original document subimted to Attorney General Moonbeam stated: "Limit on Marriage. Initiative Constitutional Amendment. Amends the California Constitution to provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

Moonbean typed in, "Limit on Marriage. Initiative Constitutional Amendment. Amends the California Constitution to provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. Initiative Constitutional Amendment. Changes California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. Provides that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

Changes California Constitution -- well now the thing that is being changed was penciled-in by some activists "judges" who know better than the 60+ percent of us "unwashed, uneducated masses" who passed Prop 22.

As a child when Hitler and Stalin were going full-bore I wondered what living in a authoritarian cesspool would be like, now I know.

RE: Heck, in what sense does the legaility of two men or two women marrying coerce you or restrict your freedom?

Never heard that one before. You no doubt have heard Why can't humans marry animals? Don't such people have rights also? Already pets are considered members of the family and it's downright unPC to call 'em pets.

In all cases there would no coercion or restriction put upon me as far as I am aware -- as long as they didn't do in the streets and scare the children.

RE: The most important function of the judiciary is to serve as a final defense against those who would use the law to abuse or destroy people they happen to dislike.

We have a democratic republic. Our representatives can be replaced, they are the law makers.

The basis of all law IMO is our culture and our heritage over the generations.

How does the culture and heritage of civilization punish gays by prohibiting same sex "marriage?" I believe that it is true that civil unions, I believe it's called, afford all rights and privileges as married couples have. Society has gone a long way, stopping just short of making it illegal to disagree with gays, IMO.

Constitutions reflect culture and heritage -- and I would add, the social contract. I believe that judges are bound by such things.

By changing the words the Sec. of State attempted to influence the vote by bringing up denial of rights as though a duly formed constitutional convention had agreed that they were in fact, unalienable rights -- or the rights had been recognized by an earlier statewide ballot.

RE: why "Authoritarian cesspool"?

We elect representatives to make laws. Activist judges make law with virtual immunity from consequences in a country ostensibly for, by and of the people.

You are aware I am sure that the phenomenon of activist judges is not limited to this one case.

BTW I have no interest in debating this -- much smarter people than me debate these things. I have stated my opinions. Call me a homophobe.. please!

you’re new here and I am just wondering are you the very same person who was recently banned for trying to tell us on this site that homosexuality should be accepted.

The person who was banned just before you joined was a kid, a teenager who thought his two boyfriends and I say boy again as that what they were.
should marry, and adopt kids

That kid who was trying to spread homosexuality was told many times that he was on the wrong site and do not come here on this site trying to spread homosexuality.

it is wrong, it is unnatural.

RE: California Supreme Court Justices who overturned Prop 22 are themselves elected officials

That is correct. That is true about that particular court, they have been removed, and Rose Bird comes to mind.

so you’re pro homo more or less.

you sound like the other guy who was banned as well just banned right before you joined this site.

This is a conservative site and it is not aplace for wanting homosexuals to be married and adopt kids

I saw a sign saying Jesus doesn’t discriminate

It was done by homo’s who want homo marriage.

You say God made you as you are

Are you gay/queer/homosexual or whatever it is called?.
