John Warner might vote for Democrat (does this surprise anyone?)

John Warner might vote for Democrat By MIKE ALLEN | 10/4/08 1:55 PM EDT Text Size:

Retiring Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.) beat his Democratic opponent, Mark R. Warner, by 6 percentage points in the Old Dominion’s “Warner vs. Warner” race of 1996.

Now, he might cross party lines and vote for him.

Mark Warner, who went on to become a popular governor, is running to succeed John Warner in the Senate. Mark Warner’s opponent is another former governor, James S. Gilmore III, a Republican who has received little support from the state’s power structure and lags by 26 points in a new poll.

“I’m watching that race, following the positions of the two candidates,” John Warner told reporters on a conference call Saturday. “There have been occasions when I have supported Democratic candidates. … But I’m not there yet.”

The patrician senator said he disagreed with Gilmore’s opposition to the economic rescue package signed by President Bush on Friday. Gilmore said in a debate Friday night that the measure rewards “Wall Street high rollers.”

John Warner said: “So much of our production is related to defense and high tech, and that’s got to have a market place. And this bill is out there to restore the actual credit flow — the credit flow, I repeat that. And that’s like a tourniquet on this economy right now — the absence of credit. And this bill — I’m not [saying] it’s a perfect bill; I think John McCain is dead on on that. But it’s the best we could do under the circumstances to zero in first, right on the credit."

With Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) pressuring Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in Virginia, John Warner on Saturday headlined a Republican National Committee conference call billed, “Why Barack Obama and Joe Biden Are Wrong for Virginia.”

When a reporter on the call said to Warner, “So it sounds like you’re open to voting for a Democrat in the Senate race, even when you’re supporting Mr. McCain?”

Warner replied: “I told you very carefully: I’m watching that race, following the positions of the two candidates. I just commented: I have differing opinions in what Gilmore expressed on the rescue package. But that did not in any way indicate a lifelong support of Republican candidates in this state. There have been occasions when I have supported Democratic candidates — you know that well. But I’m not there yet.”

Does anyone remember how John Warner screwed Ollie North in '94?

Gotta love the commie Mike Allen. Two stories in one day.

The first framed that Repub Guvs will lose seats because they voted FOR the bailout.

The second one because the GOP candidate OPPOSED the bailout.

No win.

Why is the Republican Party so infested with closeted Democrats?

BTW - What has happened to Virginia? 26 points down against a liberal?

These people are morons. A vote for a Dem, no matter how conservative or moderate, is a vote for Pelosi and Reid.

These old Repub jackasses are why we are where we are. Just like Specter and Lugar. Some young blood with some fight in them and less isle crossing is what's needed. Good riddance to this old fool.

I watched a state-wide televised debate last night between Mark Warner and Jim Gilmore. Jim Gilmore lambasted Warner for stating he was for this bailout. Warner did not deny it. Gilmore is for drill here, drill now and ANWAR too. Warner is not. Gilmore is not for this bailout OR for those he says are still on the way from others. He would vote no. Warnner is for a set time pullout from Iraq (next 16 monnths?). Gilmore supports the generals like Pertaus and Odierno. Warner kept lying about Gilmore's record as Governor and Gillmore had to set him straight.

Bottom line: Gilmore is for everything we're for and yet he doesn't have a snowball's chance of beating Warner even though Warner admitted he would hike taxes.

Virginia has lost it's way and gone blue.

Not really. Put not your faith in polls. Besides, everyone in the state got a good look at Mark Warner at the national convention and they could see for themselves he’s totally lost it mentally.

"...they could see for themselves he’s totally lost it mentally."

I was really impressed watching Jim Gilmore on WSLS 10 (Roanoke) last night (even being interrupted by the liberal moderator) come across like a true, principled, Conservative of character against the liberal Mark Warner and call him out on all his liberal proposals.

I admit that I was hoping for Bob Marshall to be the candidate, but I was impressed by Jim Gilmore last night. The 5th & 6th districts burned up the lines against the bailout and Goode and Goodatte stuck to their [NO] guns, so if enough Virginians are pi$$ed at the bailout and Gilmore is a "NO" on this one and any others, then that should [hopefully] bring his numbers up.

I certainly do, and were it not for that sonuvabitch Warner, Senator Ollie North might well have been a contender for President this year, and I can think of a LOT of things far worse than the words "I, Oliver Laurence North, do solemnly swear..."

I personally find Warner to be only mildly less disgusting than the scumbag from Plains Georgia, the one and only Jimmy STP Carter.

John Warner (R-Washington Post) was in the pocket of the Washington Post for most of his career. I’m not surprised in the least that being liberated from the Senate Republican Caucus, he’s coming out of the closet and flaming for his leftwing friends.

Well, the people of VA like all Warners, it seems. I would imagine that many think Mark is John’s son, as they are so uninformed.

After John Tyler and Robert E. Lee, VA produced few with any guts at all, it seems, or am I forgetting someone? Remember how Paul Trible bowed out rather than face Robb.

The problem is that the people have VA have been brainwashed for months now by Washington, D.C., into anointing Mark Warner as the John Warner. They are simply not capable of thinking for themselves being in the Beltway there.
