Sheriffs detectives say a Rosemark man held two thieves at gunpoint who tried to steal a utility trailer from his front yard yesterday. Detectives believe the suspects may also be responsible for stealing other utility trailers.
About 11:30 yesterday morning, Steven Rutter, 57, who lives in the 8700 block of Rosemark Road in north Shelby County, heard a vehicle slow down in front of his house. Rutter saw a gray Dodge Ram pickup truck back into his front yard.
Two men then began hooking up Rutters utility trailer to the pickup truck. Detectives say Rutter got his pistol and confronted the two men. Initially, Jessie Brown, 51, of Munford and Kelvin Nathaniel, 45, of Drummonds, told Rutter a neighbor said they could use the trailer to move some hay.
Rutter didnt believe their story and called for Deputies. Moments later, Brown and Nathaniel were taken into custody. Both were charged with Theft of Property.
Detectives say the investigation is continuing and the suspects may be responsible for other utility trailer thefts in Shelby and neighboring counties.
BRAVO!! at least, He let them LIVE!! I would have made THEM make the call to the Police, just to rub salt into the wound.
I am curious how the police responded when the knew the criminals were being held at gunpoint. Police types often initially treat the homeowner as a criminal just because he is holding a gun in his hands when they show up.
One option:
While you’re on the phone, tell the dispatcher you’ll be the guy in the blue (or whatever) shirt holding the thugs at gunpoint, until they’re in cuffs.
Sharecroppers...

As a wayback longtime ago Police Officer I will make this comment.
If I responded to any call and arrived and saw person A holding a gun on person B and or C I would draw my service weapon and require the person holding a gun to lay the weapon down and back away. I would then take all into custody until I found out who was who and who was doing what.
As a homeowner citizen If I was holding a “criminal at gun point and called the Police I would assume that upon arrival they would treat me the same until they knew the real situation.
To handle the call otherwise could lead to being dead.
Sorry but that is Bravo Sierra especially if the homeowner identified himself on the emergency call as the one with the gun holding the suspects. I understand the need for officer safety however when the officer arrived I would put both hands up, remove the clip and lay both items on the ground. My problem is that they often rush and handcuff the innocent homeowner like he is the criminal. My problem is that the police treat everyone with a gun like a criminal.
Fixed it.
So, you wouldn’t mind being treated like a criminal? That would be one of the highest forms of insult to me.
Not in my world. I am not a sheep or a criminal.
