Steve Fossett's Plane Wreckage Possibly Found in Calif.

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. — Search teams combing a rugged part of eastern California for any sign of Steve Fossett, the adventurer who vanished on a solo flight more than a year ago, have spotted what appeared to be wreckage Wednesday, authorities said.

Erica Stuart, spokeswoman for the Madera County Sheriff's Office, would not reveal the exact location of the reported aerial sighting, which she said was called in around sunset.

Searchers had been combing a 10-mile radius around the spot where a hiker had found what appeared to be a pilot's license and other items belonging to Fossett earlier in the week.

A ground team was en route to the site Wednesday night, and authorities would be able to confirm there is actual wreckage and whether it belongs to Fossett on Thursday morning, Stuart said.

Authorities, however, cautioned that hundreds of planes have gone down in the mountainous region, so any wreckage found could belong to other cases.

Earlier in the week a hiker discovered what may be Fossett's personal belongings in the California woods not far from the Nevada state line.

On the other hand, where is John Galt? Maybe he just disappeared into Galt’s Gulch. I’m surprised that no one has mentioned “Atlas Shrugged,” where the rich and productive faked their own deaths or other disappearances to drop out of the society run by the incompetent moochers and corrupt politicians.

I hope they find remains so family can have complete closure and give him a proper burial.

if his engine cut out and he glided into a crash there would have been little noise.

FOX had one of the searchers on the phone this morning and by all appearances of the wreckage it was going full blast as it plowed into the mountain; the engine was thrown on upward something like 300 more yards.

How’s anybody gonna know that? Even if they’ve retrieved year old remains, that isn’t going to be evident. (I wouldn’t think, anyhow)

Maybe I missed something, but were there any signs of Mr. Fossett becoming disenchated and wanting to 'check out' of society or life? I recall him supposedly actively planning an future agenda consistent with the last few years of his life.

Unless I see some evidence that makes me scratch my chin and go, "hmmmm" I'll chalk this incident up to tragic accident.

The cause of death never will be determined; I’m just guessing it was a heart attack, it could have been a stroke, he may have fallen asleep, the engine could have failed...no one will ever know for sure.

Did he have a history of heart problems? The reports are that the motor wound up 300 feet uphill from the fuselage and wings, that indicates a full power impact.

More than likely he was looking down instead of up, and didn't have enough time to pull up. A heart attack I would think he would chop power and look for a place to set down, or at least get on the radio, which didn't occur either.

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. - Federal investigators said Thursday they found human remains amid the wreckage of missing adventurer Steve Fossett’s airplane in the mountains of eastern California.

The remains were found among a field of debris that stretched 400 feet long and 150 feet wide in a steep section of the Sierra Nevada.

[snip]

“We found human remains, but there’s very little. Given the length of time the wreckage has been out there, it’s not surprising there’s not very much,” said National Transportation Safety Board acting Chairman Mark Rosenker said. “I’m not going to elaborate on what it is.”

You didn’t miss anything. It’s been some years since I last read Atlas Shrugged, but I don’t remember that those who disappeared gave any indication that they were unhappy. They just disappeared.

Also, I didn’t mean to assert that that’s what happened to Steve Fossett, but only that no one had suggested the parallel (except me, that is!).

I gotcha' now.

I have to admit that I was blurring your comparison with the volumes of other comments regarding Fossett. Comments that, in a nutshell, supposedly had him sipping a margarita in Costa Rica after allegedly staging his own death.

Talking about Darwin, Exploding Toilet Guy is up for the Darwin award (comment at the end of what I sent. You will find it if you do a quick search).
