The Iowa Department of Public Health says the woman reported a bat in her house but wasn't too worried about it. She turned on her automatic coffee maker before bedtime and drank her coffee the next morning.
She discovered the bat in the filter when she went to clean it that night. The woman has undergone treatment for possible rabies.
Health officials say that the bat was sent to a lab but that its brain was too cooked by the hot water to determine whether it had rabies.

“I dont think you can get rabies by eating the virus.”
No, but if the virus survives the hot water it can be absorbed through any lesions on the gums. In any case, I sure wouldn’t want to take the chance.
Regular, de-caf...or do we just wing it?
Did Underwriters Laboratories test for this?
Did Underwriters Laboratories test for this?
I have not yet actually seen the special UL "bp" (bat-proof) endorsement on any coffee makers. (I just made that up.)
But I am sure some consumer group is going to demand it sooner or later. "Did you know that people, mostly women, children, and minorities, are dying everyday due to bats in coffee makers? We demand that something be done to prevent this senseless loss of lives. Even more important are the poor bats that are dying a senseless and excruciating death in 5000 degree water!"
Does Starbucks offer bat flavor coffee?
Ive been trying for years to get bats out of my attic. No one can figure out where they are getting in.
I’ll bet it’s wonderful. Hope you can find it .... your work is genius! ;)
