Republican presidential candidate John McCain had sharp words for Congress, it the wake of the defeat of the financial system rescue plan.
"They wiped out $1.2 trillion today," the Arizona Senator told KARE 11, "Congress's failure to act today is not acceptable."
Despite pleas from President Bush and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, lawmakers rejected the bailout bill by a vote of 228-205. By the time the New York Stock Exchange closed, the Dow Industrial average had plummeted 777 points.
Answering questions via satellite from Des Moines, Iowa McCain chided those from both sides of the aisle who opposed the plan.
"This is a time of severe crisis, maybe the greatest crisis of our life time," McCain told KARE, "Our failure to act is going to cause problems not only in America, but globally."
Some opposed the package because it didn't do enough to directly address the hardships faced by those stuck in with mortgage foreclosure troubles and, in some cases, predatory loan rates.
Other resistance came from those who are fundamentally opposed to such a massive influx of government aid, at a time when the United States treasury is already straddled with record debt.
Still others remain unconvinced that buying up lenders' bad debt bring trangible results to average people when it comes to easing the credit crisis.

Yes because John McCain came to Washington to blow up the bill and stand between the voter and economic recovery. He didn’t come to Washington to improve what was already there dramatically in the short time we have. (/sarc) But don’t fret - YOU GOT YOUR WAY. The bill is gone. Our markets are now melting.
Fortunately, he didn't actually say what pissant said he said. It's a little point I know. Conservatives are supposed to try to argue from known facts and and reason using rules of logic. It's tough not to act like a liberal, I know. But we could try.
Why exactly should my future tax dollars be used to guarantee someone else's 401(k) accounts? Why does the taxpayer only get hit up for losses without sharing in any of the rewards? Are you assuming that when I graduate and get a job, I would prefer to implicitly (and effectively) fund someone else's 401(k) instead of my own?
By investing in equities, bonds, and other securities, you assume the risk that their value may go all the way to zero.
Socialization of losses on 401(k) and other retirement accounts is plain ol' Socialism.
Why are you and other McCain supporters advocating Socialism on a conservative Web site?
i guess most of the abide by the rules, sick of getting fleeced taxpayers are the “unruly masses”
i think that most of us don’t trust congress, so when a bill is rammed through without much explanation, what else are we to assume?
Bingo. I’m really thinking editorial hatchet job here. Be very careful, ya’ll, this stinks.
Nope, I would like to have seen it a while ago.
Just don’t know who is looking out for the taxpayers and who isn’t.
with all the in-the-middle of the night stuff they have done, who knows?
i just wonder why all the dems didn’t follow nancy?
it would have gone through then.
Palosi is up against the wall along with Obama. Let's improve the bill to the point where the public and Rush are 51 to 49 satisfied.
We had the same problem with Miers appointment to the Supreme Court, it was a last straw, we fought it and won.
Anyway, John is on the campaign trail and he should be carrying a conservative, winning message with him, namely, that this crisis is what happens when government becomes involved in the the markets and mandates the giving out of bad loans. Finally, he should also carry a message that first and foremost the American taxpayer must be protected and if it takes a little more time to get a bill that does that, then so be it!! He has an opportunity here to score huge points in this campaign. He must start thinking about being presidential and stop reverting to the same behavior that he exhibited as a Senator, behavior that alienated his base. Otherwise, he will be just a Senator come November.
“What else did you want, a miracle?”
How about someone who will defend his own party? How about someone who won’t jump headfirst into socialist investment schemes? How about someone who’ll shut up about earmarks and go after Obama’s throat on taxes? How about someone who doesn’t want to regulate political speech? How about someone who is identifiably conservative in any sense outside of national defense?
Do I need to go on?
What an utterly stupid and reckless statement .
You don’t have clue of the impact of a true worldwide financial crash.
You professional McCain haters have been laying real low lately .
Tonight is the night to trash McCain all over again.
Groan.
Grow up Fool.Your comments are beyond reckless .
Do you recall the S&L bailout ?
Danforth, retired senator, that staunch conservative devoted to conservative principles is McCains advisor. McCain has been shooting at us since he became the nominee. He seems to go out of his way to vilify conservatives. Putz.
That is the *ONLY* reason to vote for McCain! There is NO other reason. He has just shown us again that he will be Bush III.
And you appear to not have any clue about the fact that every time Government gets its sticky fingers into something, it usually makes things worse.
"Solutions" from the same folks who created the problem in the first place are not going to help...they will only make things worse.
“No, but it was unacceptable 99 to one. Now this version is unacceptable ~ 75 to one.”
Baloney. Even Rasmussen among investors had it 51% against and 24% or 27% for.
