From a Betty Ireland press release

Charleston, WV (HNN) – Preliminary investigations have revealed hundreds of fraudulent voter registrations , Secretary of State Betty Ireland told a Thursday, Sept. 25 press conference. The United States Attorney’s Office, the FBI, United States Postal Service and Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating crimes that may have been committed by filing fraudulent voter registration forms.

“My office takes the matter of election fraud seriously, and every precaution is being made to make sure no voter is disenfranchised by this activity,” Secretary Ireland stated.

According to the press release, similar activities have been occurring in other states too. Individuals paid by third party groups to register voters are responsible for the challenged voter registration applications.

West Virginia’s illegal activity initially only pointed to Kanawha County, but computer generated report indicate similar activity in Monongalia and Jefferson Counties. All 55 West Virginia county clerks have been alerted to watch for possible fraudulent activity.

“Voter registration drives by third parties are perfectly legal in West Virginia, and we encourage groups to undertake the effort to register our citizen’s to vote,” Ireland said. “However, when these voter registration drives are not carried out in a responsible and legal manner, significant problems can result,” Ireland cautioned.

The Secretary of State issued the following precautions:

1. You do not need to register AGAIN, if you are already registered to vote. Remember this if you are approached by a group seeking to register voters.

2. If you register using forms provided by a third party, fill out and sign the form yourself. Do not allow anyone else to sign it for you.

3. Do not provide voter information data over the phone. Ask the caller to mail you the registration form then send it to the county clerk’s office yourself.

4. If you If you receive a notice, or a letter, from your county clerk indicating there has been a change to your voter registration status that you did not initiate, call your county clerk immediately and advise that the change was not made by you.

5. If you are voting for the very first time, and you have not already provided verification of your name and address to your county clerk, current law requires that you provide this information at the polls, only when you go to vote for the very first time.

I live in Florida, and I have received at least 3 of these phoney “you need to renew your voter registration” forms in the mail in the last month or so. They look official and even have “urgent” written on them. They’re all from the same group, although because I threw them out, I don’t remember the name at the moment; however, I recall that when I read it, I recognized it as being a Democrat affiliate or at any rate left-wing group.

Obviously, I know that I’m registered and I also know that the Board of Elections does not contact people like that, so I simply toss the mailings. It was clearly an attempt to steal my registration or nullify it in some way. I’m a registered Republican, and I would suspect that Republicans were targeted by this.

I wonder how many confused elderly people or simply people who don’t read very carefully actually filled these things out and sent them back - and will find themselves unable to vote on Election Day.

I wish this tactic were getting more attention, because I bet it’s going on all over the country.

my email from the obama campaign said that they would like people to “drive for change”. that’s right, waste gas and go to the “battleground” states to help.

translation: register non qualified voters, thug tactics, protests,....

First question - is ACORN involved?

Next question - When is McCain going to notice that they are, and start tying his opponent to them? Has anybody ever seen Obama questioned about his ties to this group?

If you get another one of these forms I would respectfully suggest that you make sure the Sec. of State gets it, including the envelope it came in. If it were me, I'd hand deliver it to the Sec. of State's office and give it to his/her personal secretary to make sure it doesn't get "lost" somewhere along the way....

Yes, I will, now that I realize what it is and how widespread the strategy is.

I forgot to mention another detail: I have received some “voter registration” letters for some people who haven’t lived in this house for at least 12 years or possibly more, and in fact are probably dead (they were elderly 12 years ago). I was quite surprised when I received those, because it means that whoever is doing this is going way back in the voter records and probably simply hoping that somebody will fill those things out, “register,” and then they will be able to use the vote in some way, probably by requesting an absentee ballot.

I believe there’s a very simple action that would stop voter fraud...the same as what they did in Iraq.

A surprise bottle of permanant ink on the desk when you go to vote. Your vote...your fingerprint.

Just don’t announce it ahead of time.
