Liberal Leader Dion is accusing Prime Minister Stephen Harper of character assassination ...
An increasingly frustrated Dion responded Saturday to new polls that show his party languishing with support levels in the low to mid-20 per cent range and the New Democrats closing in from behind. "Never has a government spent so much to destroy a person and his policies as Harper has towards me," Dion said during a campaign event in Stoney Creek, Ont., just outside Hamilton. He said the leaders' debates Wednesday and Thursday will allow him to reach out to voters and illustrate that neither he nor his policies bear any resemblance to the picture painted by Harper and his party's aggressive attack ads. "I think Canadians are dying to vote Liberal," he said. "It's for us to tell them we have ... a team, with a leader, with an action plan ...for the challenge of today." Dion was particularly incensed with Harper's suggestion Friday that the opposition parties, most notably the Liberal leader himself, are wishing for a recession in order to make political gains.
Dion said as he contrasted Harper's style with Friday night's combative but civil debate between U.S. presidential rivals John McCain and Barack Obama. "I have seen two men arguing with very different ideas about what to do in Iraq and Afghanistan ... (but) I didn't hear one of them accuse the other of being pro-Taliban as Harper did in the House of Commons," he said. "None of them accused the other one of cheering for a recession." .
The latest Canadian Press Harris-Decima poll found the Tories at 38 per cent, the NDP reaching 19 per cent -An Angus Reid Strategies survey placed the Tories at 40 per cent with the Liberals and NDP deadlocked at 21 per cent.

Harper must be winning.
...but it would suck if Harper was to repeat Bush’s mistakes from 2003 to the present.
Harper is winning and liberals are more comfortable with low blows.
Liberals simply blame others.
Conservatives try to figure out how to learn from the situation.
Dion`s french accent is so thick I can barely make out what he talks about.
Hope for a solid Conservative majority that would probably balk at algore and AGW and repeal Bill C-68, the 2 Billion dollar gun registry.
I don’t follow Canadian politics, but I assume the “low blow” involved the Conservative accurately quoting the Liberal.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
With America poised to be New France should Hussein be president, Canada is trending to the Right. Perhaps, American conservatives ought to move to Canada? :)
Instead, it seems that Canadian voters are more comfortable with Stephen Harper because he's perceived as having a firm hand on the tiller.
Stephane Dion, on the other hand, comes across as a weak, vacillating nerd. His Quebecois accent is no worse than Jean Chretien's, but whereas Chretien could spin himself as le petit gars de Shawinigan, Dion comes off as inarticulate.
There are lessons to be drawn for the McCain campaign here, in that a bad economic situation need not be fatal to the incumbent party if the incumbent projects confidence and leadership.
Those were the only two things McCain didn't kick Obambi's butt on. Don't worry, he's saving them for next time. {;^)

"The most successful white doo wop group, Dion and the Belmonts were perhaps the suavest of New York City's late-fifties white teen idols. Dion DiMucci broke from that clean-cut pack with an engagingly cool, streetwise swagger epitomized by 'The Wanderer.'"

No...fight the good fight in both countries. Let us not be dismayed when things don’t always work out.

Steffie is getting upset because the Conservative numbers have risen and are now holding steady at 39-40, while his own party is down and holding at 24-25.Looking good.
