8,000 Pakistani soldiers take on al-Qaeda in volatile tribal region

This was the scene yesterday in the Bajaur tribal region, as it has been for much of the past six weeks. Bajaur, which borders southeastern Afghanistan, is a main operating base for al-Qaeda and the Taleban; Pakistani intelligence believes that Ayman al-Zawahri, the second-in-command of al-Qaeda, has been a visitor. Now it is the venue for the fiercest battle between Pakistani military and Islamic fighters since Pakistan joined the US War on Terror in 2001.

More than 8,000 Pakistani troops have been involved in the six-week campaign. The generals claimed yesterday to have killed 1,000 militants so far – yet the hostilities show no sign of letting up. A constant supply of fresh fighters from inside the country and across the border in Afghanistan is helping the militants to stay in the fight.

Looks like President Bush and General Petraeus are succeeding on the diplomatic front with Pakistan and have now opend a THIRD front in the war on terror right in the terrorists own back yard!

Bleed them....

Bleed the terrorists dry....

While the childish democRATs wring their hands and complain, the adults in the White House steadily close the noose around al-Qaeda and the Talibahn.

I’m sure if they ask nicely and remove their heads from their buttocks, we’ll drop a few nice bunker busters to remove them....

McCain cautioned the nobama on saying that we should go into Pakistan after the tallies. It's a good sound bite, but totally irresponsible and could upset the applecart of negotiations ongoing now with the new government in Paki.

Our supplies to our troops go through Pakistan. We can't risk this being stopped.

We are gaining ground with the new Gov;t and getting THEM to go after the rats nests in the NWFT up against the 'Ghan border. As McCain said, the strategy needed is to turn the local Paki tribes against the outsider al Q and tallie terrorists that are invading and using their regions as a base camp.

News like this needs to be shouted across the media - and McCain needs to shout it out...

"Tribal Elders in Pakistani District Assemble 20,000-Strong Force to Fight Taliban Militants "

This is the way to go. Encourage the Paki's to chase them out, not start a whole new war by invading Pakistan. I wish McCain had pinned him better on that. If the local tribesmen in the NWFT aren't encouraged to drive the terrorists out - we could NEVER do it, as the tribesmen would then fight us. NO ONE, not even the Paki gov't has EVER controlled that region, other the local tribesmen, since Alexander the Great...as McCain said.
