John McCain was very lucky that he decided to show up for the first presidential debate in Oxford, Miss., Friday night. Because he gave one of his strongest debate performances ever.
While Barack Obama repeatedly tried to link McCain to the very unpopular George W. Bush, Bush’s name will not be on the ballot in November and McCain’s will.
And McCain not only found a central theme but hit on it repeatedly. Obama is inexperienced, naive, and just doesn’t understand things, McCain said.
Sure, McCain is a pretty old guy for a presidential candidate, but he showed the old guy did not mind mixing it up. He stood behind a lectern for 90 minutes without a break — you try that when you are 72 — and he not only gave as good as he got, he seemed to relish it more.
At least twice after sharp attacks by McCain, Obama seemed to look to moderator Jim Lehrer for help, saying to Lehrer, “Let’s move on.”

Agreed. I would’ve loved for McCain to point out that Germany and France elected pro-American Presidents in recent elections.
We all seem to agree there are so many things McCain “should” have said. I was disappointed too and thought he could have done better. But all things considered he more than held his own and is getting decent reviews from most pundits. Many polls show a majority think the other one did better. But I find it quite telling that there seems to be a lack of “0bama wins” type headlines in the news, as I scan the web a little. If the Dems hoped for some kind of knock out, they didn’t get it.
Yeah, there’s a lot of vermin that will be coming out of the swamp once The One Who Got His Name From Some Guy In Kenya gets in the White House.
..but last night grew a new respect (as Obama should have done by at least addressing him by his title...Senator
Senator McCain was tireless, held up strongly next to this younger (& definitely less experienced ) man.....
knew his facts well ....from experience (not debate cramming like Obama)...
..was calm, low key and had a folksy quality at times that reminded me of Ronald Reagan.
Bravo Senator McCain.
To be fair, McCain had something of a me-too moment too when he said he also had warned about coming economic troubles. 0bama mentioned it first but somehow it did not sound sincere and I wonder if he was telling the truth. McCain’s response was not great and he could have been more forceful and blamed the Dems, as countless others have said. But it just is not his style, for better or worse. In any case, he seems to have done all right. 0bama’s bracelet comment came across sounding worse.
Actually what McCain should have said is --- "Screw Europe! We live in America or at least I do"

So far on the Friends...Dr. Lamont Hill said Mac won. That’s a shocker! Mike Allen, from the Politico, said Barry won but most viewers will see it as a draw. The Friends said that Barry was best in the first half and that most people went to bed and didn’t see the second half. So far no mention on the bracelet.

I really do think McCain didn’t want to say or do anything that would negatively impact the negotiations going on in Congress on the bailout package. If he needs to go back to Washington and help bring the sides together, negative comments last night would have blown his chance to help craft the deal. I think he hinted at it by talking about reforming Washington without angering either side. It looked to me like he wanted to, but just couldn’t and that’s why he seemed indecisive on the issue and didn’t directly answer Obama’s attacks.

While I loathe uh-uh-uhbama with every fiber in my body, McCain did nothing for in the half of the debate I bothered to watch. I’d have to score the debate a victory for the Marxist, simply because McCain did little to tear down the facade and expose him as one.
I wish we had a real candidate. FDT would have torn Barry a new one.
I agree with you. Also, Obama lied about Henry Kissinger. Here is a direct quote from Kissinger in the morning paper in response.
“Senator McCain is right. I would not recommend the next President of the United States engage in talks with Iran at the Presidential level. My views on this issue are entirely compatible with the views of my friend Senator John McCain. We do not agree on everything, but we do agree that any negotiations with Iran must be geared to reality.”

It was only because Obama was the first respondent to the first question. Kind of hard for John to have made the point first when Obama was given the first crack at it.

This debate topic was foreign policy. Even though they touched on the economic crisis. I think it was wise Mccain didn’t go deep on Obama and his criminals friends involved with this crisis. When they debate on the economy we will hopefully have a responsible republican deal, Mccain will have plenty of ammo, not sound like he’s repeating himself when he lays into Obama and his dealings with Raines and Johnson and the American people who have short memories will remember more come election day. I think Mccain set the stage, proved to America he is not the loose cannon he was said to be, showed statesmenship, preparedness and a love for his country first.
The standing joke on this site is that whenever anything negative occurs it’s: “W’s fault”.
Last evening when McCain asserted that Obama had the most liberal voting record in the Senate, what was Obama’s reply?
All together now: “W’s fault”.
So Bush is now responsible for the liberals being liberal -these guys can’t be serious.
